I liked most the section on the Portuguese discoveries and the temporary exhibition The Islands of White Gold (= sugar of Madeira). MNAA cannot compete with the top national museums of Europe since the number and quality of the works of the internationally most famous...More

I think Ancient Art is the wrong name of this museum as it deals heavily in Medieval and Renaissance Art, that being said, its collection is excellent. I went 2 hours before close and was rushing with 15 minutes to spare as the galleries were...More

Escape the tourist mobs and enter this serene, tranquil place with a surprisingly good collection of antiquities and old masters. There is a lovely garden cafe where you can put up your feet at the end of a visit.

The name is misleading, as the collection is not of ancient art, but art from the Middle Ages through the 19th century, with a focus on Portuguese artists.
