Address
Neighbourhood: Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.

world's oldest book shop

This is actually the world's oldest bookstore. If in the Baixa-Chiado area, drop in. Not that the interior is particularly special, but the selection of art, history and foreign language books is vast...

Go and get your stamp from the oldest bookstore in the world!
Jul 2021
This place doesn't look any extraordinary form outside, neither it is special form inside. It has nice old-school look and wooden shells, but the biggest point here is that it is the oldest bookstore int he world.
I recommend to go here, buy a book, and ask for a stamp to your book. This way you have a proof that you have been to a special book place.

Friendly, knowledgeable, and smart staff. I went in looking for a proverb book, and came out with several novels, and a travel guide. As an author myself, I really recommend Livraria Bertrand!

This beautiful tiled shop is actually the world's oldest bookstore! I bought a small journal here, which they stamped for me.

For bookworms
Mar 2019
It is really nice that this bookshop has been operating for so many years when a lot of bookstores are closing. It does not look so big from the outside but it goes all the way inside the building.

Some may think that they are selling antique books being the oldest bookshop but they got new and modern literature. Just ask the friendly staff and they are happy to help. They got English books too! The old shelves does not only look pretty but well organized.

It also got a cafe at the end of the shop where you can relax.

Portugal is a great place for foodies, natural wonders and vineyards. You have endless reasons to love the country. Here, we find another one: Bertrand Lisboa. A charming large bookshop with good selection of books.

Much of the attraction comes from the space for hanging around to read, and also variety of books for English or Portugese speaking readers to browse.

Our family spent almost an hour there despite the packed schedule, and ended up buying seven books, including a half-finished novel for my daughter.

The world's oldest bookstore in operation.
Jan 2020
Far better than Livraria Lello in Porto. If you're going to visit a bookstore at least once in Portugal, make it Livraria Bertrand in Lisboa. This is a bookstore that makes you want to read and buy books. it has even a cafe all the way back. It's like a Barnes & Noble with a bit of history. Loved it! A couple of "uphill" blocks away from Rua Augusta. A must visit. Yes, we bought books as well.

Nice, large, well staffed

Nice bookstore, with unassuming signage. There are a few historic indicators (oldest bookshop in the world), but without those you would not notice much difference from another shop in an old building.
I found a good number English language books and the staff were very helpful.

As you walk in you will see the Guinness Book of World Records certificate as the oldest bookstore in the world, established in 1732. It was leveled in the earthquake of 1755 and has been in this location since.

It was cool to see and a nice bookstore, but a little underwhelming if you are wanting to feel like you are in 287 years old store. It appears to exclusively sell new books and felt like a Barnes and Noble.

Portugal is a great country to visit for book lovers. In Lisbon I would recommend also visiting Livraria Ferin, which has the look and feel of an older bookstore. They are the second oldest bookstore in Lisbon, established in 1840. They actually sell used books, have an old book repair and binding service and have a small old working type set printing press from the 1600s. Also in Lisbon, but in the LX Factory area, there is Livraria Ler Devagar. A bookstore in an old abandoned print shop with a large printing press in the center of the store.
In Porto I enjoyed visiting Livraria Lello, of Harry Potter fame.
