Top ways to experience National Coach Museum
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

    Unique Museum of Horse-Drawn Coaches
One of our favorite Lisbon places, the collection of classic coaches from the horse era is extraordinary and they all have stories to tell of how they were used. Set in a big space so there are no crowds. In Belem, which is always a pleasure.

    So good
This was the best thing I did in Lisbon. It was a huge museum with 70/80 coaches and carriages, the earlies from the 1600s. Many were elaborate and beautifully decorated in gold. They were in all different styles, eras, and origins. It was very interesting and didn't have to wait at all to get a ticket. Would highly recommend a visit.

    One of a kind
Museum of Coaches, Belem Portugal: Belem is a head spin for a day trip. The long summer queues means a pear-shaped itinerary. We only had 45 minutes for Museum of Coaches – or 1 level of exhibits. It was truly baffling with how transportation was like for royals and a good reality pinch of how lucky we are to live in modern times where wheels are fast ands furious. The coaches evolve and are fascinating to see how art, creativity go hand in hand with coaches. #eatstylishtravelstylish

    Absolutely loved it!
For first time visitors of Lisbon , I suggest skipping it for other major attractions. For second timers however, it is a truly enjoyable experience! The art of coaches is amazing plus the informative history is very interesting! One of the coaches is available for riding and taking pictures!

Visited and enjoyed the large collection in the "new" building. Worthwhile.
We two spent about 2 enjoyable hours viewing the exhibits in the new building. Our visit was on a Wed afternoon in late Aug 2023. We bought tickets when we arrived; there was no line and thus no wait. The exhibited coaches surpassed our expectations. It was interesting to see the decorations as well as the two principal basic designs. In addition to the royal coaches, there were more "common" coaches, a prison wagon, a postal wagon, long-distance passenger wagons, and human-powered sedan chairs. The building is relatively new, and the elevators were not operating; when that is resolved there will be good accessibility. There is a good-sized gift shop, though we didn't purchase anything.

    Interesting Museum
There are 2 coach museums near each other, and I think it's the newer one that's the largest. We could have visited both, but we only went to the larger one. It's right next to the Earthquake Museum. The National Coach Museum was quite interesting. We enjoyed seeing all the various coaches and imagining being back in those days of travel! We then ate lunch at the cafe connected to the museum. Great food! BTW, it wasn't hard to get to Belem. We just took the metro subway to the Cais do Sodre stop and then the suburban train to the Belem stop (and that train is free with the metro passes -- both the Viva Viagem and the Lisboa Card).

    Great museum, and quiet
This museum is a little niche, but I think it can appeal to any art lovers, because most of these coaches really are works of art. The museum was also very quiet which is an added bonus. There are two sites about a two minute walk apart. The old coach house is pretty but doesn’t have many coaches. The new building has the bulk of the collection

Unique museum you won't find just anywhere!
This is an unique museum I wouldn't have visited if I wasn't on a tour and it was included as part of the package. I had a great guide named Mario who regaled me and other visitors in our group with the coaches' back stories, which were lively and intriguing. The museum is out of the way in Belem, and not in central Lisbon, so the place was very, very quiet and a nice respite from the museums that are usually crowded, loud, and noisy. It was nice to check out a museum I normally wouldn't visit.

    Small but interesting museum
We stopped in because it’s included in the Lisboa card. I wouldn’t go out if the way to go here and it might not be worth it without the card, but it’s near many other attractions in Belem and I thought it was neat to check out. A bunch of old royal horse drawn carriage cars, a temporary exhibit, and some royal artwork all in a cool old building .

    Fantastic museum
Probably one of the best museums we visited in Lisbon. With the Lisbon card we got in for free and we're really glad we went in. The coaches were really ornate and beautiful, with plenty of information about each coach to read. The museum is really unique and I'd recommend it to anybody visiting the city.

This is one of the better museums I've been to-- it has a really niche subject but does it well. It's interesting and fun look at basically transportation history in lisbon, with a focus on the royal Coaches. And some of them are mind boggling. Well worth the 8 euro and the hour or so to go through it. I never thought I'd have a favorite Portuguese royal coach but here we are (it's João V's-- it's ridiculous and ostentatious, and I love it. )

An enjoyable museum focusing on rare, beautiful historic coaches. This museum is located near the famous Jeronimos Monastery and Monument to the Discoveries. The National Coach Museum will appeal to all ages. There were no lines when we visited and it was not crowded. Explanations about the coaches were in Portuguese and English. Rarely does one have the chance to see this many well-preserved historic coaches under one roof, so do visit if you can. Allow at least an hour-and-a-half for the visit. Highly recommended.

I’m very glad we came here today as there are more coaches than I anticipated and all of them are fabulous. There are sedan chairs, extravagant royal coaches, stagecoaches, mail delivery coaches and even a prison coach with cells! It’s only 8 euros too. Whilst you are there, walk round to the famous Belem pasteleria for some Portuguese custard tarts

I emailed the museum and asked for information about the possibility of meeting an expert for questions.
They responded the next day with an appointment to meet Maria Ana Bobone
(Curator)
When I arrived I spoke to Maria that I was researching for my book "Journey". The book is about relationships and is set in the late 19th Century, with individuals in various relationships, each on a journey. Each couple is riding in a distinct carriage. I desperately wanted to experience just seeing, touching, and understanding the workings and feel of a 19th-century carriage. I was in the middle of researching when I opened my computer, and instantly, an advertisement for the National Coach Museum collection appeared. At that moment, I realized I had to go to the museum! Maria with her thorough knowledge made that experience absolutely wonderful, and I can not thank her enough for her time and understanding.
