Rated as one of the top 3 libraries in the world. This place is a must see. It is not big, but it is beautiful inside and out. Although I didn't see them the story of the Bats entering at night to eat the bugs to protect the old volumes from the bugs is real.

This library with its stunning design and decor and its wonderful collection of ancient tomes is well worth queueing up for, not that we had very long to wait. The whole university square gives you a spectacular view over Coimbra and the Mondego Valley, and this library is the icing on the cake. The story of the little bats is... More

A beautiful multi level ancient library with a fantastic back story. Built at a precise thickness in the walls to maintain the proper humidity to prevent damage to the valuable books, it also houses a colony of bats which come out at night and eat the insets that would eat the paper of the books.

A stunning collection in an absolutely lovely setting. Not to be missed and take the time to read the prepared explanations. They are very informative though the french translations, for a university, were not of the quality expected.

Fabulous library in this, the oldest university in Portugal. The rest of the building is also well worth the visit as is the old town.

The library consists of one big room. The library is nice but the price payed for visiting it is higher than Louvre or Tour Eiffel. The price for a family is 33 Euro and the visit takes between 3 and 5 minutes and of course you can't take photos.

A well deserved part of Coimbra's UNESCO designation. Relatively modest on the outside the beauty of the interior must be seen to be appreciated.

Quite a collection of volumes from 17th to 20th century, several rarities and an atmosphere of a place of knowledge. Unfortunately photos are no allowed, but the place is amazing and is definitely worth the visit

An amazing place well worth a visit. It has a bit confusing opening hours but the worse it can happen is for you to wait 20' till the next opening. It's impossible to buy a ticket only for this site and for 10€ you get to visit another 2 less attractive sights but as they are just next door it's... More

We stopped in Coimbra mainly to see this (although my husband didn't know that until we got there). Definitely worth a visit! This library may be one of the most amazing ones I've seen. I wish we could have taken photos within, but it really was beautiful. There is a ton of history here, so lots to learn during your... More
