We enjoyed our trip to Algar do Carvao. The officials have done a nice job of creating steps and pathways to some very cool views and points of observation. The colors and rock and plant formations were fascinating! Keep in mind that there is a...More

What a glorious surprise it was to enter into that cave and then understand how it was formed by 2 lava flows and a big bubble that created the cave itself. You could spend many hours observing all the formations and then studying the science...More

Algar do Carvao is possibly one of the most unique volcano experiences you can have on this planet. The site is only open during certain hours, and a combination ticket will provide you access to another completely explorable dormant lava tube nearby. Upon entering through...More

So apparently this kind of cave is very rare - which makes the experience cooler. If you go, make sure to read or ask one of the guides to tell you about the cave since it will enhance the experience, otherwise it's really just like...More

We went inside the actual volcano and looked up through the chamber! Lots of stairs! Very wet inside ! Messes with your equilibrium a bit! Don’t miss this place!

This is a must-do if you are in Terceirra. You should know there are at least 250 stairs to navigate, some very steep. I saw teenagers get winded going up the stairs. With that said, if you take your time the views are worth it....More

If you have never had a chance to visit a volcano from the inside, take the opportunity to visit the "algar do carvão". It's the only volcano in the world whose interior is visitable and easily accessible, through a tunnel and a staircase. Very beautiful.

the visitors center, on site, sells the tickets. If you are with a tour, usually the ticket price is included in the tour price.

I believe it's open all year round. We were there in January. It is only open in the afternoon. Enjoy your trip. I love the Azores!
