IF correctly rated , this dive centre would be ' minus stars ', most generous I can do is to give one star to enable the review to be lodged via Trip A, as merely TERRIBLE , not life threatening . - A comprehensive TA review now follows >>>> My Nerus experience was twelve months ago but only now that Insurance has settled my claim do I feel able to review this operation.. I went to wonderful Ponta D. / Sao Miguel as part of a Dive Club with 15 other divers where our Tour operator had booked Nerus for our 6 day / 12 dives package ..Our Scuba Club has written a very comprehensive review with a fully detailed list of complaints...... but no responses.. Nerus totally disinterested and their concept of service sadly lacking , their focus was to get out to a site , minimum time on site then despite the very poor diving and absence of fish sightings ((absence not just of pelagic but fish in general) - not Nerus fault but with their local knowledge and 15 divers on 12 dives we should have expected a real effort to search for better diving(. which they did not!) , then returned to Harbour as soon as possible to allow them to do further dives that same day , . This review is restricted to my personal comment - I had all my own gear only had to hire the wet suit and a dive belt . Belts were cheap / shoddy plastic and guess ? I had the same experience as another Nerus review . The dive belt came undone ,I lost it / shot straight up to the surface- fortunately only at circa 18/20 metres. .No one with Nerus ( The proprietor or second in command ) , was at all concerned. Next day and subsequently similar problems - by now when diving i continuously checked the belts fastening.. Nerus still not concerned despite my voiced concerns on dive safety. Now for the serious / major concern Approx 8 miles out of Harbour on second dive of the day a problem - . Dive boat had a fault and heavily taking shipping water - the engine and single pump (no auxillary pump or alternative on board) failed. Via a Mayday / S..O.S call another Dive RIB came to our aid and everyone was safely transferred onto the Rib. Nerus dive boat eventually sank while on tow back to Ponta D. harbour.. Twelve months later despite every effort made we have no idea on the cause of the leak / boat sinking , have never been able to see or obtain any explanation unofficial or official report. Undoubetedly part of the reason why the Insurance claim took so long to be finalised.. This is a long review but I am happy to respond if any Trip A reader wishes to discuss or would like more information PS Loved Ponta D and the Island - Sao Miguel. mike j

Being a fairly newcomer to diving, this place made us feel very uneasy about the dive. For starters, I had issues with my equipment - my buckle on the weight belt was not clicking properly and I ended up loosing one of the weights during the dive!! The funny thing was that they made me pay for the lost weight even though it wasn't entirely my fault. The other thing that really put me off was their inappropriate approach towards one of the fellow divers who felt really sea sick while on the boat - no notice whatsoever by the main diving instructor + passing comments in their mother language thinking nobody could understand what they were saying!! Very unprofessional. With that said, one of the diver instructors, Sebastiano, was very helpful and customer-oriented. If you're thinking of diving in Sao Miguel, I would recommend that you look at other diving centres.
