The longer tour of 2 hours must be previously booked and it is a little bit challenging. Along the 1 km path you have to crawl and pass by narrow spaces, therefore you must be ready for sweating ;). It is very interesting and you can see "bolas de lava", and other rock formations. The staff is very nice and... More

2 mile walk uphill from our hotel brought us to the caves based on a housing and industrial near the motorway. 45 minute tour was very informative, and well worth the 5 euro fee. Good changing facilities and toilets. Our son ( 7 months old) loved it. Bring a jumper - temperature is 12-15c underground - warm if you are... More

Very interesting to see how this cave was built. The staff explained everything. They did a great work also restructuring the cave. (the locales didn't realized what this was before and had another use for it... ask about it!!) They have also guided tours further in the cave. You have to book it, you need old clothes there for. They... More

This cave of volcanic origin of the Island of São Miguel is known geologically as "Complex Volcanic of the Peaks". It is located in the western part of the city of Ponta Delgada and forms the largest lava tunnel on the Island. After many years, it is currently being explored and it is possible to cover a stretch of about... More

I went to this attraction as part of a half-day trip with a tour operator. It wasn't worth the price I paid so I would suggest you get a cab from Ponta Delgado or drive yourself there. The video viewed before the cave walk was a bit outdated and not great, but they explained they are working on a replacement.... More

We started off the tour watching a 10 minute video and had a 30 minute tour of the cave. Although it was interesting listening to our guide's explanations, I was not particularly enchanted by this non-picturesque cave. For an admission fee of 5 euros, it was inexpensive, and I would only recommend going if you do not have any plans... More

When you pull up this attraction looks like a very small house but it's deceiving! The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The tour was very interesting and worth doing. It takes about 45 minutes including the tour and short video.

We chose to do a tour of the lava caves when rain was forecast for the island. It was something different and something really interesting which I probably won't have the opportunity to do again. The tour guide Hugo was very good and engaging.

The tours are run by volunteers so be patient while waiting for a response. They do short tours of the lava tubes every day but they only do the extended tour once a week. The extended tour is 3 hours, 4 people max and you will be crawling in places. The guide was very knowledgeable and was happy to answer... More
