It's the most natural volcano that you have on the island. No houses or cows just pristine nature. You have the option of walking down to the water level on a 20min down walk. Theres other options for hiking but guided is recommended

The “PRC-2-SMI Praia – Lagoa do Fogo” trail starts iclose to Ribeira do Praia bridge and it takes around 2 hours each way. The path goes up for 2-3 kms, until it reaches the "levadas" through a luscious and green forest, and it finishes in a volcanic landscape with green endemic plants and birds (including seagulls nesting) before reaching the lagoa.... We went straight from the airport because we checked the webcam and found it was sunny. The weather changes by the minute and this was the best tip we had for the Azores. It was beautiful but the trail looks easy down, it is a son-of-a-gun going up.

We went up the mountain and stopped at different viewing points. They were all equally beautiful. You have to look up to the top of the mountain before going there. If you see clouds, you will see nothing :P

Excellent views to the volcano crater + lake inside. The edges covered with beautiful flowers and the water below is just amazingly green/blue.

We decided to do the short hike at Lago do Fogo. We took a taxi from P.Delgada to the viewing point (25€) and toke the steps down to the base of the lake. this takes about 30 minutes (for us, this was including stopping a few times to take pictures). The steps are high, and the path bit narrow, so... More

For me, Lagoa do Fogo is one of the best attractions on the island of Sao Miguel. It's an exceptional wonder of the world! It crosses the island. So there are 2 main roads going up from either the north or south points of the island. Along the way you can stop at different viewpoints to capture the beauty of... More

Lagoa do Fogo is usually covered in clouds, thus it's name. But the winds will change the view all the time and the place looks mystical. As you drive you will see several parking areas and from each you will get a little different view of the lake/area.I wish my knees had not been so sore from previous hiking, as... More

My wife and I hiked to Lagoa do Fogo via the “PRC-2-SMI Praia – Lagoa do Fogo” trail. The hike is about 3.5 miles from the trail head to Lagoa do Fogo with the first mile or so being challenging because of the almost 1000 foot gain in elevation. The challenge is worth it – the Ribeira da Praia valley... More
