Beautiful Cathedral
Jun 2021
The Cathedral de Faro is really worth a visit. Beautiful baroque altars emphasis very rich history of Faro. Very interesting courtyard with a bit hidden Bone Chapel.

Its worth climbing to the top of the bell tower to see the view of the city.

Good

My friend and I visited the museum of the cathedral. It was very interesting and has quite some nice stuff to offer.

The price is cheap and it’s definitely I must do for history/culture buffs

The Cathedral de Faro is worth a visit. There are so many different altars in this church, it is incredible. A lot to see. There is a nice churchyard too. I'd love to come back with a little more time to have a better look.

Are You A Christian?
Jun 2020
When I entered the Cathedral there were 3 old ladies on guard and as I went to enter the main part I was asked, 'Are you a Christian?' I was shocked! I had never been asked that before in any of the many cathedrals and churches I have visited. Nor have I been asked if I was a Muslim at any of the mosques I have visited in the Middle East and Asia. It gave the impression that non-Christians were certainly not welcome. I did not reply, but turned around and left, rather than show my annoyance.

A temple consecrated in the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary!
Apr 2019
Right at Faro's historical center heart, at the monumental square of "Largo da Sé", you will find its outstanding Cathedral. It was built at (probably) the very same site of an old Christian Basilica, converted into Mosque and re-converted into a Christian Church - the "Igreja de Santa Maria" - right after the reconquest of Faro from the Moors by Portuguese King Dom Afonso III and his troops, in 1249. Around 1577, it was appointed the Episcopal Seat of the Diocese of Faro and became its Cathedral. It is a beautiful Church, which has been pretty much restored along the centuries, but still preserving some of its ancient gothic, renaissance, mannerist and baroque characteristics. Take your time and visit the "Igreja Catedral de Faro", its chancel, sacristy, chapels and cloisters. Enjoy awesome gilded carving woodworks and magnificent 17th century Portuguese tiles. At the Choir Room, a fantastic 1716 pipe organ with oriental inspired paintings. Climb its bell tower and enjoy a superb view of the the city's historical center. Entrance fee at E$3,50 and reduced tickets available for senior citizens and students at E$2,50. The Episcopal Palace and the Episcopal Seminary of Saint Joseph are just in front, as well as the statue of Faro's notable Bishop, Dom Francisco Gomes de Avelar. Unmissable! Enjoy!

PRETTY NICE!
Mar 2020
Certainly worth a visit if in the area. Interior nicely done. I particularly liked the old organ. There is a small bone chapel on the grounds., and also small museum. Climbed to the top of the tower (68 steps) Nice view and also neat to look at the bells. Well worth the admittance.

Beautiful Church

Its worth climbing to the top of the bell tower to see the view of the city. The cathedral is beautiful inside, and the tiled plaques are stunning. The cathedral square is beautiful surrounded by orange trees.

The cathedral is beautiful and the views from the tower are amazing. Careful of the bells that ring in 15 min intervals. It can be loud. The kids loved it. The staff was very friendly.

Stunning Cathedral and surrroundings.
Feb 2020 • Couples
Absolutely beautiful cathedral. Some wonderful smaller chapels within, exceedingly ornate, fabulous carvings and masonry. A small museum upstairs, nice gardens containing a ‘bone cemetery’, and a bell tower which can be ascended by 68 steep-ish steps, giving some great views over the city and beyond. All this cost us €3.50 each. A highly recommended visit.
