I understand- this place is pretty and unusual but overall there are so many other things to see in Bruges. I didn't feel like I really saw or experienced anything new after looking at pictures and reading reviews. If you have time check it out but I wouldn't say it's a "must see"

Not far from Minnewater Lake, is the Beguinage or Begijnhof. For history fans, stop here to see where lay women lived as a community during the medieval era and beyond. The cluster of buildings surround a charming idyllic park. Stop by the chapel and soak in the atmosphere of the the whole compound, you won’t be disappointed. Nearby is Minnewater... More

My favourite part of Bruges. It was so peaceful and serene. I went into the church and the women were singing, and the way it echoed throughout was so beautiful. I definitely recommend this to get away from the very busy, touristy rest of Bruges!

The Beguinage is one of few (or only remaining). Originally was a place of refuge for women. It is a walled area within the city centre - maybe 15 min walk from main square. Little museum inside - where you can see period furniture and learn about the beguinage. Small fee for this. Highly recommend - unusual and interesting.

A relaxed stroll around these mellow grounds balances the hubbub of activity in much of Bruges. Take some time to include it during a walking tour of the old Bruges.

This area has been home to women for centuries. And still is. It's peaceful and people still live there. The lake is right outside. The tour guide said that the walls and gates were there to keep the women safe and that they still lock the gates every night. It's a nice spot.

Fascinating history of Bruge's female religious community life that continues to this day. Not at all what it first implies; no locking-up-your-daughters stuff, but a safe place for women at a time in history when little refuge or autonomy was available. Extensive grounds which back onto river & lake. Note: the gates are still locked at 6pm, so especially don't... More

It's very good idea to have a walk there from the center, especially during spring, when it's full of flowers.

this place is fantastic if you wanna be away from the bussy centre; inside you also find a chapel where you can pray and sometimes the nuns are singing. in spring the courtyard is filled with a carpet of springflowers

What a wonderful place. So peaceful and beautiful. Loved the courtyard and the small chapel. So idyllic. It really takes you back in time. Perfect time for a visit too. Bruges was not that crowded at all during our visit. So one can appreciate the serenity of this place.
