Autrique house is the first house designed by Victor Horta and shows already a few art nouveau elements, where he later became famous for, like the stained glass window in the staircase and the mosaïc floor at the entrance. When you want to visit the house you have to ring the bell,, the lady at the reception will come and... More

Enjoy the privilege of having a 19th century to your own for a short visit. See how a (well-off) family lived then - in a house specially designed for them in 1893 in the Art Nouveau style. The famous architect Victor Horta was then at the start of his career. His trademark attention to detail is visible already then, working... More

La Maison Autrique is a good example of Art Nouveau architecture which houses temporary exhibitions. The most recent one, "Lanternes et Lumières", gives insight into the evolution of photographic and cinematic art.

One of Brussels' fine Art Nouveau houses. It feels like entering a 19th century private home. Nice details, but quite small. Unfortunately, the area in Schaerbeek, where the house is located, is not nice - it's run down, dirty and sinister. There is nothing Belgian about this outlandish place, instead of European flair expect halal butchers and tea rooms full... More

Why? Because the number of real art nouveau elements in the interior (as well as the exterior) is rather limited. This is a typical example of the eclectical architecture mix, very popular in Brussels around those days. It shows a bit of Horta's talents, but his other and later projects are much more worth a visit! As a compensation the... More

Maison Autrique is the very first striking building Victor Horta designed (1893) This important Art Nouveau touchstone underwent an exemplary restoration. It's interior division is full of surprises: François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters have staged an original scenography, from the cellar to the attic. When i visited the house, there was a (temporary) exhibition around the work of Winsor McCay.
