St Gilles is a real enigma. It's close to the city centre and the posh shops of Avenue Louise, yet the streets can be messy and it attracts it's fair share of dossers. The architecture is beautiful and striking and at the heart is the pedestrian Parvis which hosts a daily market and fills with revellers at night. The bars... More

St-Gilles is, together with the city center and Ixelles one of the most popular areas in town. Now what makes the difference with those 2 other communes? - People : The contrast between the poor area in the lower part (near midi station) and the posh area (av. Louise) is very interesting. This makes this commune a mixture of social... More

I recommend taking a walk from the Midi/Zuid train station to this authentic neighbourhood where you will find many hidden Art Nouveau treasures. Grab your morning coffee with speculoos on one of the "terrasses" on Parvis de Saint-Gilles, the nice cobbled main square. A nice escape from the crowded centre!

We just got back from a fabulous weekend in Brussels, where we based ourselves in St Gilles. We felt safe at all times, fabulous architecture and great bars, shops and cafés. Not touristy at all, a refreshing change from the Grand Place etc. Plan to return soon so that we can explore some more.

I have been living in St.Gilles for about 3 months, and at first, it is such a strange mix-match, it can be difficult to understand, but the more time I spend here, the more I like it. Hipsters: You have to love to hate the art crowd. With their skinny jeans and big-framed glasses, and hip bars. They have apparently... More

Not a place where you feel comfortable... Insecurity, tags, squats. Another example of the multiculturality in Brussel.

This area with many art nouveau buildings makes a nice difference to the sometimes crowded old city centre part of Brussels. There, you will find the georgeous art nouveau Horta House (Musée Horta) to be visited or Hotel Tassel which is the second of the four Horta buildings inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage list and usually cannot be visited....
