About
Dominating the Sablon Square in the center of Brussels, this church was transformed from a chapel into a major gothic church starting in 1436 through the beginning of the 16th century, and truly exemplifies the Brabantine gothic style of architecture.

A very nice church, worth about 30 minutes. Make sure to grab one of the guide pamphlets to the right as you enter, so you'll know what you're looking at.

If the Church of Notre-Dame du Sablon looks like a quintessential Gothic church today it is because 18th, 19th and 20th century ‘restorers’ have played arounds with it at leisure, removing the surrounding houses, demolishing parts of the building or adding ‘typical’ elements. More than fifty of the statues date from the past century. But somehow, today, the result looks great.

The church is a haven from the surrounding bustle, full of monuments, statues and paintings we found described in a leaflet available near the entrance. We loved the pulpit with the symbolic representation of the four evangelists (a winged man, a lion, an ox and an eagle). It was carved by local sculptor Marc de Vos for a now demolished 17th century Baroque church elsewhere in Brussels. The two stunning chapels flanking the choir, the chapel of Saint Ursula, which is the funeral chapel of the Thurn and Taxis family, and the Chapel of Saint Marculf contain some very fine Baroque marble statues.
.
Entrance is free (we are not in Holland here) and there doesn’t seem to be a dress code. But even so, respecting other people's places of worship is a matter of good manners.

A beautiful landmark

Incredible chapel with amazing art work and atmosphere . The high beautiful gothic ceiling and the intricate statues and art really bring forth the majestic power and influence of catholic church . This is a must visit for anyone who respects fine art and i truly feel that the art works of many men and the dedication to the craftsmanship demands respect and admiration if anything . You may not like or agree with religion and church politics but you can not fall short of enjoying the beautiful art that makes our life on earth abit more enjoyable .

Notre Dame in Brussels

The Church of Our Lady of Victory at the Sablon is one of the most beautiful churches in Brussels. It's a wonderful example of the late-Gothic flamboyance with lots of other architectural sites inside: baroque chapels of the Thurn and Taxis family, the postmasters of the Habsburgs since the 15th century, for instance, can be found on either side of the choir. The church also has lots of paintings and valuable sculptures by Hieronymus Duquesnoy de Jonge, Mattheus van Beveren, Jan van Delen, Gabriel Grupello and many more. One of their treasures is the boat of Beatrijs Soetken which she used to convey a statue of Mather Mary from Antwerp to Brussels, or so legend tells us. Every year since its arrival, the crossbowmen carry the statue around the church in a procession, an event that would eventually grow into the Ommegang of Brussels which still starts off at the Sablon and ends on the Grand Place. The stained-glass windows of the 16th to 20th century, then, show us the ties the church has had prominent families through history. The sculptures in the entrances of the church all date from the 20th century, the south portal richly decorated with numerous Biblical figures. The tympanum above the entrance door to the church depicts a Christ figure surrounded by scores of saints and was already there when Robert Campin around 1420 painted his Marriage of the Virgin, now in the Prado in Madrid. Allow ~ 1 hr for your visit.

It was a cold morning, we decided to just a take look at the cathedral and was so glad we did. At the moment there is a nativity display from various countries, they are all different and enjoyable to see, well worth going to see.

What a spectacular gothic Cathedral near Brussel city center. Hard to fathom that it was constructed in 1436. And a structure had been there before that. Brussels is just a must see European city

This is a magnificent cathedral in a beautiful part of the city centre.

The building itself is amazing inside and out, and close by to some attractive public gardens and the palace.
