About
This surprisingly white Roman Catholic Church was built in 1477 for pelgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Now this church is visited daily by locals and foreigners for Holy Mass with beautiful and devout liturgy. On Sunday the Holy Mass is in English at 18:00

Catholic Church by the canal in Leiden
Apr 2018 • Couples
A beautiful church by one of the main canals in Leiden. There is a 10am mass in Dutch/Latin on Sundays and a 6pm mass in English Sunday evening. Very solemn service and welcoming community. Park in a supermarket parking building across the canal since only permit parking is allowed in the town center.

A gilt free treasure
May 2017 • Couples
This is a very beautiful and simple church of great architectural status in Leiden. Leiden has so many beautiful buildings, but this one is special, with the lovely spire. The interior is a gilt free zone, with simple white walls and some beautifully sculptured pieces. The church has traditional pews, and a traditional feel to it. It goes for the interest groups in mass, having a Latin and English mass on Sunday. The simplicity of the interior is a real experience to see.

For those who like their masses in Latin and twice a day
Oct 2015 • Family
This is a roman-catholic fortress in a protestant city. Last time I visited the mass was completely traditional.

English mass - 6 pm Sundays
Jan 2016 • Family
As an American/Mexican ex-pat family, we're accustomed to mass in a variety of languages, and stumbled upon this church only because we were searching for a Sunday evening mass. However, once we discovered Heilige Lodewijkkerk's English-language mass at 6 p.m. on Sundays, we kept coming back. Of course, the familiar language is a nice change, but the enthusiasm and the commitment of the priest and the parishioners is what really stands out, along with the child-friendly atmosphere (yes, there's a play / crying room, in the back, to the left side, and a bathroom, too, accessible through the JPII chapel that's through the door to the left of the main altar), as well as the subdued beauty of the church itself. The Sunday evening mass tends to be quite full (even in the 'off-season' of mid-winter), but also quite welcoming (there's even a 'coffee hour' after the evening mass on the first Sunday of every month). The JPII chapel (with the customary reliquary of a bit of his blood) invites quiet contemplation. And there's even on-street coin-pay parking available up and down the street right outside the church door, which makes it unusually accessible to car travellers - especially by Leiden / Dutch standards - even though it's only a block away from some of Leiden's major shopping areas, Breestraat and Botermarkt. All in all, a church well worth a visit, whether for mass or just a quiet, peaceful interlude.

Beautiful Catholic church in the center of Leiden, with a welcoming international atmosphere
Dec 2015 • Solo
Beautiful catholic church in the center of Leiden. I'm really glad I discovered it! Sundays you have the option to go to mass at 10AM, where everything is in Dutch and Latin, or you go at 6PM to the English mass. This is when I usually go. The atmosphere is great, full of international people, and I felt welcome right away. Definitely worth going if you are new in town or if you haven't been yet!

Child-friendly catholic church with mass in English
Dec 2015 • Solo
There are not many options around for a catholic mass in English, but this charming little church offers one every Sunday at 6 PM. The Sunday morning mass is in Latin, which might seem intimidating, but I noticed many families with small children attending. Probably the separate sound-proof mommy&child section is what attracts these. Like most churches in this country it is not continuously open during the day, so while it's worth a touristic visit, you cannot just walk in.

This Church is beautiful not only structurally, but also the people who compose this church. A warm and welcoming community. I felt right at home almost instantly. The Spirit of Christ shines through these wonderful people!
