Historical City Gate with Hotel next door
Dec 2020 • Friends
The Morspoort is one of the eight original city gates of Leiden. It was built in 1669 to replace a wooden building - and now is a state monument. Next door is an old garnison which now is a hotel. Not to be missed on a Leiden city walk.

I was there and walked around this place. It was ok, you can visit and take some pics. Maybe good to visit one time if you visit Leiden.

One of two remaining Leiden's city gate in olden times. Next to it is a remain of a medieval prison.

A nice old building that's been well-maintained.
Aug 2019
This is a nice small building to walk through with cafes and bars on the other side where you can sit outside on a nice day. It's been well-maintained over the years and there's a big black canon outside that you can have your photo taken with, if you so desire. It's nothing exciting, but it's a nice part of history.

Marsh Gate
May 2019 • Solo
From 1669, almost 100 years after the siege of Leiden by the Spanish, built during a time when Leiden was prosperous and wanted to show it. In contrast to medieval gates, entries to the city built in this period no longer served a mainly defensive purpose, but rather to represent the fortunes of the city. Late Renaissance style with decorative patterns in stone, topped by a small charming tower, it was named Morspoort (marsh gate), due to its proximity to marsh land.

Two gates left of the walled city
Apr 2018 • Family
Keep the enemy out, buold a wall around the city and lock the gates at night. Morspoort is one of the two gates left of a total,of seven gate that were the entrances to the wall protected city. Thanks to the wall and gates Leiden was able to withstand the Spanish during the 80 year war.

One of the city gates still remaining.

Nice city gate. One of a few that are still there. For us here in Leiden ordinary stuff but actually quite nice.
