Unique museum in Leiden - history of science

There are many science museums elsewhere, but the Boerhaave is a very special one. Leiden being a city of science and home to the first university in the Netherlands, is a perfect... read more

I enjoyed seeing some of the historic scientific intstruments, but some of the main features, such as the presentation in the old operating theater, are in Dutch only. I went to check this one out on my own--I think my kid would have been bored.

We are sorry to hear you missed the English version of the Anatomical Theatre! Normally, our hosts show our foreign visitors where to find the 'English headphones', so we are sorry we missed you. Fortunately, most information is bilingual (English and Dutch) in our museum. At the moment we are closed for renovation and when we re-open mid 2017, we... More

There are many science museums elsewhere, but the Boerhaave is a very special one. Leiden being a city of science and home to the first university in the Netherlands, is a perfect place for a museum of this kind: a beautifully reconstructed surgery theater of the old medical school, original Leeuwenhoek microscopes, the helium liquefaction equipment of Kamerlingh-Onnes and much... If you like rarities and odd things you must visit the Boerhaave Museum! It's a former laboratory turned into a museum with amazing and diverse collections.

Themed around science and medicine, this rather small museum shows it does not require big architecture to create an attractive museum. The collection is a mixture of antique apparel and explanation catered toward kids. Add some exhibitions on rather "grown-up" themes and you get a nice mixture for the whole family.

The museum is located in the old town of Leiden. The entrance fee is very low, just one Euro. I was positively surprised about that. The building itself feels really cosy, it has many small rooms and corridors. Here you find the instruments the discoverers in 17th century used to navigate over the oceans. The first microscope is here, which... More

The Boerhave museum goes has a history about 5 centuries... It is amazing how many things you can learn and see...I am wondering: how was life before year 1850 when anaesthesia was discovered and the benefit of keeping hands clean???

The display of van 't Hoffs tetraeders and Kamerlingh Onnes cryogenic lab are already reasons enough to go there!

This science museum is excellent. Leiden has a long scientific tradition which shows in the exhibition, with many old measuring instruments, anatomic drawings, herbaria, anatomical oddities, medical inventions, and items of a visiting Einstein. With an anatomical theatre in which a nice movie is played. And a temporary exhibition about Philips products and inventions.

I went to the Museum Boerhaave while I was staying in Amsterdam, and taking a day trip out to Leiden and Haarlem. I am a little bit of a history of science geek, so I was definitely keen to visit. I was impressed - for a small museum it did very well, and had some wonderful items on display. I... More
