Museum Volkenkunde is a museum about people housed in a historic building just five minutes' walk from Leiden's central station. A huge totem pole greets visitors as they enter the museum through the garden. Museum Volkenkunde presents regularly changing exhibitions and its permanent display features objects from eight different cultural regions. Objects that all have a story to tell about humankind.

Very friendly, helpful staff. We spent a few hours in here looking at their extensive collections of world artefacts. Really interesting and well thought out. Sometimes I had to look twice at things as some items are modern. Children seemed to enjoy the Japan exhibit. The actual building is airy and light with two or three floors and the café... More

I truly regret that I had just 45 minutes to visit this museum. Its exhibition is great and tells the story both the Dutch encounters with different cultures and for the unique cultures too. Almost everything I saw there was unique. The museum was divided into several rooms - Asia, Africa, Oceania and there were also separate rooms for the... More

Very high quality exhibitions with good translations for all objects shown. The museum is a good mix between displaying contemporary and fun culture as well interesting history of peoples. The café is also worth a look.

'Cool Japan' is the latest of the special exhibitions hosted by the museum (from yesterday to mid-September) and it is stunning. It shows examples of contemporary Japanese popular culture... its comics, films, amine, style, its ' cuteness' and its warrior culture and juxtaposes them with historical examples. It is a visual feast and an intellectual treat. The explanations are in... More

The collection at this museum is super interesting! Lighting is great! I have done a gammelan workshop here with work, and that was a lot of fun. They put a lot of time and effort in their temporary exhibitions, which are amazing!

Very good collection of cultural objects from Africa, Oceania, Australia, Islam, America and Asia. The African Bronzes and pre-Colombian objects are well worth seeing. The Ground floor has objects from Indonesia, the former Dutch colony, which go from the former Hindu religion to most recent objects. These are quite extensive and have a number of good Hindu statues. The other... More

The National Ethnographic Museum has an impressive collections of artifacts from all over the World. It is a delight to take a peek at different objects from different places and eras, all in a sequence that makes sense and connects to each other. The World of Feathers exhibition is pretty nice and eye catching. It keeps the visitor engaged from... More

Went there with my daughter to see the temporary exhibition on feathers. It is an exceptional experience and we took opportunity to see the permanent exhibitions. A very nice museum

This is of course quite subjective, but I love learning about people and different cultures/tribes/customs so I love this museum. You can pick a section per day and just wander around looking at all of the neat expos from a certain region of the world. My visits were always highly enjoyable. Also the museum seems to be kid-friendly (although I... More

We visited the museum yesterday. Great variety to look at. Staff was also very friendly and the little bar served good coffee and offered a variety of snacks.
