About
Museum Volkenkunde is a museum about people housed in a historic building just five minutes' walk from Leiden's central station. A huge totem pole greets visitors as they enter the museum through the garden. Museum Volkenkunde presents regularly changing exhibitions and its permanent display features objects from eight different cultural regions. Objects that all have a story to tell about humankind.

Visited this museum which has pretty close to the train station and by the canal and has interesting exhibits. Worth a visit.

One of the best museums in The Netherlands
Aug 2019
One of my all time favorite museums in The Netherlands. Been here several times (before covid) Love the things on display and learning about different cultures.

Interesting for everyone
Jan 2020
A good collection from all over the world, well organised and displayed, showing how different people live along the globe. Fun for a 5 year old, an anthropologist and a travel-enthousiast. Friendly staff and several fun ways for children of various ages to explore the museum. We were here on a saturday afternoon, and it was not crowded, and not too quiet.

Healing power
Jan 2020
This is our favourite museum in the Netherlands, but this time the 'healing power' exhibition didn't get the full 5 stars. Perhaps because the topic was a bit too broad to put in 1 exhibition? (Too) many 'healers' interviewed on tv-screens, and some exhibits just weird rather than interesting. But...still a very nice exhibition! We usually come for the special topic and then briefly stop at other exhibitions as well: this time Indonesia; very nice!

The old museum has been completely rebuilt behind the old facade. Interesting exhibits about culture and life in distant parts of the world. Well done exhibits.

First visit
Nov 2019
First visit ever, turned out to be quite good.
Lots of different cultures are covered with statues, artifacts, clothing, video's, and some video quizzes for children as well.

This period there's a special exhibition "Helende Kracht" about shamans, nature witches, etc. Controversial, but it may interest one.

Free entry with Museumkaart in the beautiful city of Leiden.

We only dropped in for 30 minutes on our way back to the station so we focussed on their fine collection of Aboriginal art

The museum looks well laid out and fun. Similar to Amsterdam's TropenMuseum.

The small exhibits outside and the Totem pole are free to view.

The museum is recommended as is the city itself.
