Lower your expectations before you go

An interesting museum, but you won't miss much if you don't go to see it. Part of the tour includes obvious things on the street that any smart person can see without the help of any tour guide. Too small and little things to see.

Former cheese weighing house
Mar 2020
In former times the Weighing House (‘Waag’ in Dutch) was the place where cheese was weighed (for tax purposes) before being sold on the market outside. There are some large cheese scales on display inside. The ground floor of the building also houses a souvenir shop offering the usual junk and the tourist office, which provided us with a free brochure containing a small city map. Upstairs there is a cheese museum, but we passed up on it.

De Waag is a rather plain building. The large white relief on the façade by sculptor Bartholomeus Eggers has been replaced by a copy. Looking up at it we wondered what the man to the left – the one putting his foot on the scale – was doing. Was he just trying to stabilise the scales or was he trying to cheat? We couldn’t figure it out. During an evening walk, we happened upon another, much smaller relief relating to the Weighing House on the side wall of restaurant De Zalm (‘The Salmon’ in Dutch): a stone, dating from 1670, with a Dutch text saying ‘Not too high, not too low, just right’ and the representation of a glum-looking salmon. The innkeeper’s cheeky protest against the fact that he was not allowed to build higher than the Weighing House

Beautiful building

This historical weighing house in the past is now being used as the tourists information. The few exhibitions still remind the visitors of the previous functions of the house.

The main landmark of Gouda
Apr 2019 • Couples
Of course Gouda is known worldwide for its Cheese. So youc annit miss the Waag. However, we needed three tries before we could get in when there was no guided tour for a big group of tourists. But then we were by ourselves and got a private explanation from the helpful guide. Apart from interesting facts and exhibits about cheese, they also have some bits on other things Gouda is famous for, such as pipes, candles and stroopwafels.

Old weighing house, now cheese market
Jul 2018 • Family
This used to be the Weighing House for cheese and other products in the past centuries. Now the house works as a cheese market selling the local produce. You can try to go to the Cheese Market day outside (in the main square), but if you miss it, you can buy good cheese at any day in the Waag.

Cute building
May 2019
The Waag is a cute yet small building; can’t miss it. A cheese shop inside so easy enough to pop in to see what it used to be like.

The Tourist Information Office is also situated here. As you walk around the house you can get close up to the traditional equipment used to weigh and sell the cheese at the market. You can buy entrance ticket to the cheese museum. Pick up a tourist guide to ensure you don't miss any of the points of interest. Cheese is on sale, a wide selection. Try and sample before you buy or just enjoy. Make sure you try the Honey Waffles. One word delicious. If you arrive on a Thursday it's cheese market day. Vibrant, colourful, entertaining and lots to see and do.
