About
The Sassenpoort (English: Sassen gate) is a gatehouse in the citywall of Zwolle, Netherlands. It was built in 1409 out of dimension stone, mostly trachyte and tuff, and restoration work was done in 1893-1898. The gatehouse is a 'rijksmonument' and is part of the Top 100 Dutch heritage sites.[1]

Fairytale city gate
Dec 2019
Really attractive landmark dating from 1409 in the beautiful city of Zwolle. Not open every day, so will have to return to look inside.

Beautiful gate
May 2019 • Couples
The Sassenpoort is another one of the beautiful and impressive gates to the city that we saw while on our Netherlands trip. It is wonderful to see when these old buildings are given new uses and not torn down. Wonderful historic monument

Fabulous

This ancient town gate is stunning. It is both ornate and huge. It is not clear how much is original though. Well worthy of protection

Towering old timer
Mar 2019 • Family
Charming old tower that used to serve as a book repository, a jail and a battle defense station. The knowledgeable staff are happy to show one around and provide facts and stories of the history of the tower.

Watching over Zwolle city since 1406
Feb 2019 • Family
The Sassenpoort was built between 1406-1409 as entry to the Hanseatic city of Zwolle - which got city rights as early as 1230. It is still there as scenic entrance to the beautiful historic inner city and can be booked e.g. for marriage ceremonies. During the 80 year war with Spain extensive defense work where built around the city in the year 1592-1612 and the Sassenpoort became an inner gate. The current clock tower dates back to the restoration of 1894-1897.

Medieval landmark
Aug 2018 • Couples
In the Middle Ages Zwolle was a walled city with a moat all around. The moat is still there (The historic city center is surrounded by water), but the walls are gone, except for the impressive Sassenpoort, which was one of the city gates. Most of the Sassenpoort is from medieval origin, except for the clock tower; this is an addition from the 19th century. The Sassenpoort is the medieval landmark of Zwolle.

The last remaining entrance gate of Zwolle
Sep 2017 • Solo
Zwolle used to have many gates to enter the city center, but all of them where demolished in pervious centuries. This "Sassenpoort" fortunately remained untouched and is protected on the monument list.
Build in the late 14th-early 15th century during the the blooming period of Zwolle it is a gem in the city.
A copy of the "Sassenpoort" is in Madurodam in the Hague, but best is to visit the real thing of course.
The building can be reserved for weddings if you want to say the magic yes word in a pittoresk surrounding.

Medieval gate to Zwolle City
Aug 2017 • Couples
You can also access the gate and visit some of the rooms located in the gate. If you are a fan of history and old architecture you will like it. The gate is small so don't expect to spend more than 3-45 mins there max.
