Gravediggers gate
Jun 2021
The original gate dates from 1465. Its location marked the new extended outer ring of the city at the time formed by an earthen wall. The fortification served a clear purpose: to protect the city against conquerors. The architecture was rather military, than esthetic. This changed during the early 1600s when the city walls and gates lost their defensive role. In 1617 the Cellebroedersgate was reconstructed and got its present Renaissance style appearance. Its new destiny had become to serve as (luxurious) residence of the wealthy city elite. Probably the reason why the structure survived and was not demolished.

Interesting is that the gate eventually got its final name from a nearby Cellebroeders convent. Perhaps in tribute to the work of the brothers who buried the dead during the Plague that struck the city. Celle from 'Cella' meaning grave.

Impressive gate

This was my second favorite of the old gates into the city of Kampen. They are all in wonderful condition and you should make it a point to see them all as Kampen is such a lovely town to wander around.

One of the big gates into the town, and one of the major landmarks. There are several and you should see each one.

It's great gate with museum inside of it. You can walk besides the river, just besides the gate. Church is right behind it so after gate view you can go there. Very nice.

Wonderful medieval building
Jul 2013 • Couples
The small city Kampen hosts three mediëval gates, this one the Cellebroederspoort was named after a nearby monastry and replaced to its current location in 1465. It is wonderfully located in a park that surrounds a part of Kampen and has two towers and nice ornaments. Really worth a visit, not far away from the center. Unfortunately it's only opened on Monument Day.
