Good mix of art
Sep 2020 • Friends
Good mix of art from the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Interesting and well thought out juxtapositions. The selection appears haphazard on occasion with a Tracey Emin stuck in a forgotten corner, which would have been a good fit for a differently themed room. It's easy to spend two hours here even with the cafe closed.

Fascinating mixture of obects
Aug 2019
Regardless of the temporary special exhibitions (which were memorable), this museum was well worth a visit for the permanent collection of paintings which includes real gems from the Middle Ages onwards – collected mainly by local industrialists back in the day. An impressive silverware room. Likewise the porcelain room. Plus there is a delightful courtyard for a coffee. Unlike so many museums, this museum is on a human scale too.

Nice museum
May 2019 • Couples
When looking for cultural things to do in Enschede, this museum is a nice choice to send some quality time and learn about the past of the city but also see some modern art. A nice place to visit with a lot of things to offer.

Nice collection of art and interesting expositions about the local past
Mar 2018 • Couples
I went to this museum twice. They regularly have an interesting art collection combining different styles of art. There are also historical elements, about the region, that one can see.

Good museum
Dec 2016 • Friends
The museum hosts different exhibitions which tell the story of the city of Enschede and various painters of the Netherlands. It is overall a very interesting place to visit, and it is also free for students!

One of the hidden treasures of Enschede
Apr 2017 • Couples
We are not that much of the stereotypical arts and gallery visitors, as we prefer more interactive museums. Having said that the Rijksmuseum in Twente, settled on one of the northerly ring roads of Enschede, is a rare exception. The curator and staff proved more than once to us that their choice of pictures to display can open up our minds and facilitate understanding of the complex rules of fine arts and drawing. Any exposition we visited enriched us and widened our horizons. It is a bit tricky to park your car there, so you better use one of the large parking areas and walk the short distance. Enjoy it!

Nice, but unfortunaly partly closed
Oct 2017 • Friends
Nice museum with a remarkable permanent collection of art of different styles and periods. The museum takes you on a walk through time, where you start in the Middle Ages and travel through the ages until Modern Art. The museum exhibits paintings but also porcelain and other artobjects collected by the family van Heek and friends. During my visit there was also a photoexhibition which was also worth a visit. Definately an option if you are around in Enschede.

'Heart of Renaissance' exhibition not to be missed
Mar 2017 • Solo
I went to the museum mainly to visit the well-organized and engaging Heart of Renaissance exhibition (on display until late April). This is an interesting overlook on Italian paintings at the peak of Renaissance movement in Central and Northern Italy (Moretto, Moroni, Lotto), and some Rafael works as well.

What makes the exhibition particularly interesting is that it focus on the methods and cross-influences of the art scene in Venice, Brescia, Firenze and other places at the time, discussing both techniques and styles. The exhibition is not so large (comprising around 60 works in total), making it is easy to follow and engage with. The portrait sections are of particular interest.

The permanent collection on display, in the other wing, is well worth a look as well. The museum was first established by a Dutch industrialist with strong interests both on early 20th Century art and also early works in this part of Europe. The museum juxtaposes late Medieval works with those that followed a century later, a time of transition in visual arts where many innovations when many innovations were introduced. In that sense, it makes a perfect compliment to the Heart of Renaissance displays. Sadly, the permanent collection has displays in Dutch subtitled in German, but not English. The audioguide (free) will provide English information on the permanent exhibition.

An "interesting" mix of displays
Jan 2017 • Couples
Had difficulties paying by card- they only seem to accept local debit cards-odd. Whilst most of the displays are old masterpieces from the area they have some very modern and "weird" displays including clowns and modern conceptual pieces. It was fine to pass an hour or so. Would not rush back.
