    Windmills, cheese & clogs
Well worth the visit to explore some real Dutch heritage. We took the train ourselves from Amsterdam after buying the Zaans pass rather than booking a tour. It worked out cheaper and we weren’t time restricted. The location was great and it was really enjoyable to go back in time away from the city.

    Beautiful and informative
This is a lovely way to while away a few hours, there is a map as you enter with information about the site and a qr code to scan for detailed information as you walk around. We got the train from Zaandam, two stops away, follow the crowd as all are headed to the windmills. Lots of little shops selling chocolate, peanut butter, and various other souvenirs.

See the Windmills, get some cheese!
While visiting Amsterdam we wanted to see working windmills. We took the Sprinter Train from Amsterdam Central up to Zaanse Schanes and walked to the area - took about 35 minutes total. It's about 18 minute walk from the station to the area. The village area has a museum, shops and windmills. Take your time, buy the pass from the Musemum site that lets you in the museum and 2 windmills. Well worth the time and experience. The only bad thing is the weather is so brutal this time of year - one minute raining sideways and windy the next sunny so dress accordingly.

    A nice day out
Buy the pass that gets you into the main museum, the biscuit and cholate factory, two windmills, the copper place, the weavers cottage and the time museum. Take your time, wrap up warm as it is spread out and when the wind blows you know it. Ask lots of questions the guides are very knowledgeable . Plenty of places to eat and shop . A nice day out. Easy to get to by train if you are mobile. Use your barcode on your ticket to use the toilet for free in the main museum .

Must be on your list of places to see before you die
Zaanse Schans is a neighborhood of Zaandam near Zaandijk, Netherlands. This place will take you back to the 18th century. Zaanse Schans is full of old wooden windmills and houses; Some of them were moved here for protection. The Dutch call their traditional wooden shoes klompen. Farmers wore them to move comfortably between crops, as most of the fields were at or near sea level and therefore frequently dealt with floods. It is now sold as souvenirs.

    A Netherlands Must Do
A visit to the Netherlands offers so many incredible opportunities to explore this gorgeous and historic country. No visit there would be complete without an experience like Zaanse Schans. This is essentially an open air museum, but much more diverse and well equipped than some such museums. There are multiple windmills, all fully restored in operation as they have been for centuries. Each windmill delivers a different function, producing various sustainable products. The educational value of these windmill demonstrations is outstanding. They also offer demonstrations of cheese making and wooden shoe production. There are several snack shops and some really high quality gift shops as well. If you want to experience authentic Dutch history and maybe collect a special souvenir, this is THE place!

    Breathtaking.
After a long 4 years spent in one country, my wife and me finally got to travel. This destination, which she chose almost by chance, is magical. The weather was particularly good, got lucky, everything looked sensational and unforgettable.

A beautiful piece of dutch history.
A step back in time. Walking along a canal and seeing the old windmills. Very picturesque and pretty. often wet and rainy, so take appropriate clothing. You can go inside some of them, for a fee. There's a nice little cafe at the start, to warm up and get something tasty.

    Wonderful Windmills and Village
The village is quite good with traditional windmills. Very nice, well structured and green place. It is also possible to go inside the windmills. There are many shops which serve you hot chocolate. If you come to Amsterdam, it is easy to get there by a bus from Amsterdam Central Station. Strongly recommend!

    Must see!
Fabulous trip out. Easy to access on the train from Amsterdam Central then around 10 minutes walk from Zannse Schan Station. It was a lovely morning out, easily spent 3 hours or so here, without going into the windmills. Lots of shops and workhouses to look around and buy souvenirs from, places to eat and a museum. Really lovely to see windmills and can imagine it would be beautiful in spring and summer. Would definitely come back!

We visited this site several times, a nice daytrip on a sunny day. Most of the houses are inhabited or are restaurants. The Zaanse Schans site has free entrance, if you want tot visit the windmills and museums you have to pay.
You can visit the bakery museum, see how wooden clogs are made, visit some windmills, the cheesefactory and the "Zaans Museum".
Starting in 1961 original buildings were transported to this site by road and water. The whole is a look into a part of the industrial history of Holland. It takes about half a day to visit if you also visit the "Zaans Museum". There are loads of tourists and the souvenirs are overpriced.
We really prefer the open air "Zuiderzeemuseum" in Enkhuizen or the open air museum in Arnhem where you need a whole day to see everything and is less overpriced.

Because of the Corona regulations, one had to book the entrance tickets and the parking ticket for a certain starting time in advance on the internet. The tickets had a QR Code and in spite of this you still had to queue at the cash desk and these were then exchanged for a big ticket with photos of the sights, which were voided with a ballpoint pen or date stamp when visiting a sight. With the QR Code on the parking ticket printed out at home you could not leave the area, because when entering the premises you got a normal parking ticket which was marked as paid at the cash desk. Of course, one wonders why the senseless internet tickets have to be printed out in advance.

With the Zaanse Schans Card, one can only visit a few places of interest, further attractions have to be paid extra. Furthermore it has to be pointed out that many attractions were closed.

We left the pancake house that was located on the premises, as some tables were not clean and as we did notice that it was a self-service restaurant. The five employees in the main room preferred to talk to each other instead of taking care of the guests.

If you are staying in Amsterdam and are looking for scenic views in the heart of Holland, this windmill site poses a perfect opportunity; the Zaanse Schans site is quite close and is a desirable break from the urban sprawl. Explore a fully-functioning modern saw-mill (each charge a separate entrance fee) as well as sampling free Netherlands cheese-tasting experience where you can also purchase authentic produce. Our visit to the windmill included a film about how the windmill was constructed. This is an ideal way to also get some exercise whilst inhaling fresh air by hiring a bike which you can ride around on specialised paths around the magnificent park. Afterwards, you can go to the nearby picturesque fishing village of Volendam for lunch and a museum with dioramas and displays on Dutch lifestyle and culture (currently closed for extension work but will reopen in March 2020). If the weather is ideal, this could be a perfect day out.

Our group of 6 adults (ages 20-75) enjoyed 3 hours exploring this village by bike. We rented front he bike shop at the exit of the train station (reservation recommended and cash required to rent). We took a guided tour of most attractions we visited in Amsterdam, but decided to explore Zaanse Schans on our own and were so glad we did it this way. The large tour buses arrived in droves and we repeatedly heard people saying "we don't have time for that, we have to get back to the bus" or a guide saying "you'll have free time later." We explored on our time table and found we either didn't need tickets for what we wanted to see or we were able to easily obtain tickets at the attraction (windmill tour of Het Jonge Shoppe). Beautiful countryside and kind people working hard to give you an authentic experience. Don't miss the cheese and clog shops! I recommend you arrive first thing in the morning or wait to go later in the day. Easy train ride here from Amsterdam Central. Note that restrooms are often distant from the particular part of the village you are exploring and they have a queue and require payment of one euro by credit card, so don't wait until you're desperate to find the restroom. Overall, I highly recommend this side trip from Amsterdam and it is much safer to bike here than in the city.

It really was a blast from the past as hurricane winds almost swept us off our feet, but not enough to deter us from a walk down memory lane and a view to how much the windmill did for society. A great day out for all ages with many attractions and historical activities to be seen. There is also a large indoor museum if the out door weather is too harsh. Car parking for the two hours there was €12.

The Netherlands, that's Tulips, Windmills, Amsterdam. Of course it's a lot more, but these are the things that always come to mind. It wasn't Tulip season when we've visited The Netherlands, so we decided to look at some windmills. There are countless windmills all over the country. But this place here has several in one place. In a nice location by the water. And with lots of other things to see. So it's really an interesting package.

The entrance to the open-air park/museum is free. The Zaans Museum costs extra as do some other several smaller museums and shows. But also many of the arts & crafts shops and displays are free to visit.

It's a nice and easy walk along the windmills. It's all flat and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. In the village I recommend to have a closer looks at the Wooden Shoe Workshop and the Cheese Farm (with a lot more cheese varieties than you'd think). And of course there's a souvenir shop as well, but other shops offer wonderful products and items as well. Feeling a bit hungry or thirsty? There's a Café on site.

There are several cute bridges crossing the small canals in the village. And there are lots of photo op: Huge wooden shoes, the windmills from every possible angle, the farm animals, the bridges.

You really need some time on your hands if you want to really enjoy and explore the area. We surely did. The windmills are fascinating and impressive. It's just a beautiful construction to look at.

We really enjoyed our visit here. It's stunning that the open-air park is indeed free to visit. And dogs are allowed as well. We had a great day here. Loved it.

Just north of Amsterdam, this place is a real gem of The Netherlands. Small town with river runs through it and the main attractions - the working windmills dotted along the river. Entrance is free (pay for parking) but to get inside the windmills, need to pay (not a lot!) and 25 minutes boat trip is also highly recommended!

This was definitely one of the must visit tourist attractions in Netherlands. We went there by train from Sloterdijk station and about 20 min to reach Zaandijk Zaanse Schans station. From this station, we walked about another 20 min and followed the direction we saw the list of windmills along the coastline. It was unfortunate that the time we was there was raining so the beautiful view was covered in grey. Nevertheless we still able to visit some of the beautiful and interesting spots there. The most impressive stop was the wooden shoe factory. We went to the one in Volendam and that was really small compared to the one here. There was a demonstration on how the clogs were made. Very educational. Hanging around the places and just love the farm life. Very peaceful very quiet...just too commercial. Would really love to visit it again.

Compared to Keukenhof this open air musuem space was crowded and very disorganized. Long lines for food (which was awful), museum houses, and bathrooms. Bathrooms cost 1€ and had no toilet paper, garbage all over the floor and sink water was off. Big tour groups in small I door/outdoor spaces made moving around difficult.

Positive was pretty setting, windmills and big Zaan museum was quite well done with displays on industry in Zaan area and chocolate biscuit history.

We caught the train to Zaanse Schanns. This is a little bit of a walk and not well signposted but well worthwhile. The village houses a number of traditional windmills as well as other parts of traditional Dutch life. We had a look inside one of the windmills and you can see the managers repositioning the sails in the morning. We also saw clogs being made with a narrative about how it was done. Well worth the train trip.
