Right on Dam Square
Mar 2020
The royal "New Church" in Amsterdam features all the trappings of an old church in a major European City - beautiful interiors, burials and jam packed with history. The self-tour provides a good overview of the solemn space. Located right on Dam Square next to the Royal Palace.

Well Worth A Visit
Jul 2020
I wasn't expecting a large photography exhibition here but it was very good and enough of the church on display for its architecture.
Right next to the Royal Palace.
Well worth a visit.

Great exposition the graves are impressive as well
Feb 2020
The graves in the new church are of famous Dutch heroes and very nicely decorated. They themselves make it worth a visit. The bonus was the Suriname exhibition on the former Dutch colony..

Iconic building, interesting expo
Feb 2020
During our visit to Amsterdam, we visited the 'Great Surinam exhibition' in the nieuwe Kerk. It took some time to find our way, but eventually we were impressed by the informative exhibition. We learned a lot more about our former colony, its people and its culture

no need to go in
May 2019
There's really not much to see inside...well, for most churches in Amsterdam. It is not like cathedrals in Paris. Some people go into gift shop to see some parts of church, but I do believe they have a sign against that.

Loved the Huge Impressive Area!
Jul 2019
I loved the huge impressive area of the New Church, and it was interesting seeing the 'family burials' rooms around the inside (many with closed doors). The gift store was extensive - I couldn't resist several containers of hilarious 'Last Supper" mints - don't miss them!

Suriname-Dutch Guyana expo
Nov 2019
The exhibition on the former Dutch colony offers an insight in the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and offers art made by the many people that make up the multicultural society of Suriname. The drawings of Surinamese Insects by artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717)contrast the modern artwork commemorating the victims of Desi Bouterse( the December murders).Pre Colombian art and art of maroon(run-away slaves) also are on show.
An informative short film on the wooden architecture of Paramaribo rebuild in Louisiana Style after 1821 by Surinamese writer Cynthia Mc Leod (born 1936)completes the expo .

Great Suriname Exhibition going on
Oct 2019 • Friends
The New Church in Amsterdam was completed in 1408, so it is not thàt new. Michiel de Ruyter, the Netherlands’ most famous naval hero is buried here. Currently it is in use as a venue for exhibitions. The ongoing exhibition about Suriname (Dutch Guyana) is quite strong and fully bilingual in Dutch and English.

We preferred Oude Kerk
Oct 2019 • Couples
Museumkaart visit.

We enjoyed our visit to Nieuwe Kerk but strangely felt that the Suriname exhibition got in the way. Maybe because we had visited the TropenMuseum last week and we were already overloaded with tales on NL's colonial past. Also we had visited Oude Kerk earlier in the day and just wanted to compare the buildings.

Highlights for us;

The stained glass windows, when they were visible.

The ornate wooden pulpits.

The exhibition, loved the stone figure - very alien like.

The information about Jewish plantation owners.

There was a free audio tour but we didn't enjoy it as much as normal.
