The area
Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

It's always been a center for entertainment and eating and drinking. A big square with a statue in the middle and restaurants all around. It used to be very honky tonk, but it has been cleaned up and the pot traffic has been moved to side streets.

I like to come here sometimes. The apparently world-famous Tuschinski Theatre (Cinema) is located around here. There are plenty of hotels, cafes, restaurants and fast-food outlets as well as Wok and French Fries takeaways in this area, actually something for every age and budget. Quite fun actually to just sit here and watch the world going by, for just a little while✌✌✌

Was the only Xmas event on in Amsterdam but in the afternoon it was summat of nothing 🤔. However took the obligatory picture of Rembrandt and the spaceman and then hot footed it back to the hotel slightly disappointed.

Beautiful square with a lot of bars and restaurants of a grand variety around.
A spot worth to visit when you're in Amsterdam.

PROS
* Active place
* Lively with entertainment places and restaurants and bars
* Good sized public square with large statue of Rembrandt

CONS
* Can be crowded
* Can be noisy
* Can have people who are "down on their luck"

"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... as i was walking two nights in a row from wherever I was to the Royal Carre Theatre to see the performance of the Analogues (which was amazing both times). I once saw a mounted policeman and policewoman trotting alongside a tram- see photos. I enjoyed seeing and studying and photgraphing the Rmbrandt statue.

I found the place crowded and noisy and loud and I was cautious and didn't feel safe nor relaxed there- see photos of people who were there when I was.

WAS IT WORTH THE PRICE?
It's a free city public area

WOULD I GO THERE AGAIN?
I wouldn't seek it out and if I ended up there on my next trip to Amsterdam, I would practice "situational awareness."

ADVICES
* Restaurants and bars and music if that interests you
* Be sure to at least see the Rembrandt statue

Great location given all the nearby restaurants. Always an available seat somewhere if you want to just sit and people watch. There were also activities that happened in the square (I didn’t see a schedule posted anywhere, but one day there were opera performers and another day a art fair.)

If you really wish to see the. Rembrandt statue then you should visit, other than this there ate many nicer areas in the city to visit. There you will find many restaurant hawkers and just a bustling crowd.

Nice square with the Rembrandt statue. Wasn't too busy when we walked through in late July and there wasn't too much going on although they did also have a giant gold astronaut which was interesting.

We would pass by this area since it's near our hotel. Thank God our hotel is NOT fronting this park/square since it's always busy and full of people -- in the park, bars and restaurants. Not a park to chill or relax.

Crappy restaurants and very touristy looking and catering. The choices here are bad to worse. We only ate nearby as it was late and we were super hungry. People were actually outside hawking their restaurant;that is low class. Unfortunately, Amsterdam food is not very good as it appears the locals only lke junk food and alcohol/beer. Eat a good breakfast or lunch and don't bother with dinner.
