Nice spacious zoo, interesting animals. Didn't get to see it all but personal highlights were the sea lion show and the elephants. €21 entry was about average and maps are €2 (funding for the new elephant enclosure). Looked like an interesting aquarium, insectarium etc. Really nice cafe/diner too ("Too tigers?") very airy, would be lovely in the summer

Visited this zoo just a couple of days ago; there was a large number of interesting animals so it was a good job we got a map! There was plenty information about each of the species exhibited, the zoo seemed very clean and the staff were friendly, however the only thing that let the zoo down was the size of... More

It was so much fun. I have never been to a zoo and seeing the animals was incredible. It would be better in the summer but going this time of year it was so quiet and uncrowded.

Good place to go for the day, plenty to see on a day trip, not all animals were caged which made it more interesting, well worth the money for a days outing.

On first impressions we were happy to see some of the animals not enclosed by cages but after you walk past the first few exhibits of animals it all becomes a little more depressing. The lions were in a small enclosure and although I could see they had some extra space that was enclosed by cages it didn't appear to... More

All the animals looked happy and it's a nice walk on a warm day. Loved the sea lions! Make sure you check out the daily schedules to see when feeding is.

There isn't much on web sites about the zoo. It's not in the top 5 things to do online and this is wrong! Amsterdam Zoo is AMAZING!! It's big it's only €20 entry. The staff are friendly. There are elephants and lions which was surprising. All the enclosures were clean and the zoo was spotless. Me and my boyfriend went... More

A great collection of animals that were very active even on a cold winters day. Even saw a baby elephant, gorilla and giraffe.

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighbourhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
