The Royal Palace Amsterdam is in use by the Dutch Royal House. Most of the year, the Royal Palace is alsof open for visitors. You are welcome to discover the rich history and interior of this magnificent building in the heart of Amsterdam. Visitors are welcome to discover the building's rich past and legacies left by it's successive occupants - as Amsterdam's Town Hall for 150 years, the French Royal and Imperial Palace for 5 years and the Palace of the House of Orange for the past two centuries. The Royal Palace was built in the seventeenth century as the Town Hall of Amsterdam, after a design by Jacob van Campen. It's paintings and sculptures were made by some of the most distinguished artists of the time and allude to the city's influence and prosperity in the Dutch Golden Age. In 1808 Louis Napoleon, brother of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, became King of Holland and converted the Town Hall into a Palace. The superb collection of Empire furniture, clocks and chandeliers date from that period. The collection of Empire furniture is one of the best preserved and most complete collections in the world. The rooms in the Palace are decorated with artworks from the collection of the House of Orange-Nassau Historic Collections Trust. Many paintings show the various members of the family of Orange-Nassau

This place offers us way more than what we expected. Story of this place flow through how this was built as a city hall, then converted to a place under French empire and how eventually became Royal Palace Amsterdam. Free audio tour that comes within...More

The palace has recently been refurbished and the audio guide was very informative. The only draw back was that the actual tour was a bit short.

There is no doubting the amazing facade of this building and the inside continues to fascinate. However this 'palace' is unlike any other I have been in to. It is a conversion from its original purpose as a town hall in the 17/18th centuries into...More

Compared to other European palaces, the Amsterdam Palace though looks very grand from outside, only 1st floor was opened for tourist visits and not too many staterooms. The grand hall looks good but rest of the palace visit can be finished around one hour.

It is much more than the "Royal Palace." It is an art museum in its own right, with art depicting the royal family and furniture from the reign of Louis Napoleon in the early 19th century.

Main hall very impressive. Wonderful staues and freezes. The commentary was excellent and very informative. The outside looked a little tired and may need a clean.

The audio guide is free and great. Bring headphones and spare about 2 hours to go into detail or 1.5 hours to get the general info.

I sat across from the Palace the first morning I was in Amsterdam. It needs a major cleaning. Kind of depressing. Not what I expected at all. I did not visit the inside

Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of
tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists
and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the
best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe.
Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops
of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones
Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods
such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring
