Our family loved using the canal bus to get from AtoB. It takes longer but we liked that and it gave us chance to recharge our batteries. The routes covered everywhere we wanted to go. The driver always helped with our buggy and was polite. Would pay the extra again to do it this way. You get a really nice... More

We paid €19 each (I think!) for an open top canal boat tour which we shared with another couple. There were blankets to stay warm and our guide was fantastic! He was so passionate about the city and had some brilliant insights and stories he shared. We had a wonderful time. He would answer our questions about the city and... More

The canal cruise is a must do while in Amsterdam because you really get a sense of the city and it's history. The canal is very clean too because the city cleans it every quarter so it remains sanitary...our tour guide scooped a glass of water from the side of the boat to show us how clean it really was.... This was a great way to see Amsterdam. It really is a beautiful place. As we went in November we thought we may be cold but the boat was warm enough, the windows slide back so you can take better pictures. The tour it self is about an hour long, but allow an extra half hour or so for the... More

The canal tours are an ideal way to view the canal houses and architecture of Amsterdam. A fun trip for all of the family. The hop on hop off boat trips are great because you can get off to see areas of interest.

We went with Blue Boat Company. The trip took about 1.5 hours. Individual headphones used for commentary. Covered boat for bad weather. Highly recommended.

One hour canal cruise is a good way to see and learn more about the city. We went with Love Boat but companies all seem to do similar packages. Audio was clear. On board narrative from captain was also good. No food or drink sold on board. There was a toilet.

If you have a 3+ layover in Amsterdam or just are there for business or vacation this is perfect. It only takes about an hour and a half all together and it's interesting and beautiful. I would recommend doing the tour in summer or in fall. Ye your offers several different languages for the tour. Teaches you about old and... More

By far the best way to experience the historic centre of Amsterdam is a trip on the historic canals. Hundreds of bridges and canal houses pas by during a relaxing slow boat ride. Forget about the bus (it is not able to drive a long the canals, to narrow) and only try the bike if you can handle it, the... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
