Late afternoon and in need of a beer so came back to Cafe Jaren which we had visited and enjoyed on previous visit to Amsterdam. Nice table on the outside canal side terrace... waited for service, very slow! Gave order and waited... And waited... And waited! Eventually gestured to waiter... where are our drinks! He shrugged and smiled! I guess... More

It has a beautiful outside area and terrace, sir by the river. Staffs are very friendly. Drinks and food are reasonably priced. Strongly recommend.

We came across this grand café when we needed a break from the Pride Parade and decided to go back for breakfast the next day. Whilst the interior is lovely, spacious and airy the real atraction is the significant terrace along the canals. From this place there is a lot to see of what is going on, on this busy... More

This is a well located restaurant serving interesting food in a modern setting. Noise can be an issue. The entrees were very good but note that American "pulled pork" is very different from that served here. It was very tasty though. There is a salad bar with interesting options including caper buds. Service was friendly but not consistent.

Always great for lunch, when its warm you can sit outside and have a very pleasant afternoon. On this occasion we went for the first time for an evening meal upstairs. All great and once you order something it arrives very quickly - although all the staff this evening seemed to be happy to be chatting to each other rather... More

Lonely Planet describes this as a place to "have a satisfying sandwich and a glass or two of wine". they may be right, but I wouldn't actually recommend it to anyone to eat upstairs in the restaurant. The house white leaves a lot to be desired; we had the Angus steak and the Wolfish. The Angus was underdone to the... More

Can't understand the glowing reviews. It's a faceless place, could be anywhere in the world. It has some terracing over a canal, not enough shade. We arrived, wandered about sat at a table. Didn't like it and moved to another table. Sat a bit. There were about 10 people in there but no obvious staff. Menu, very boring, nothing took... More

A friend came to visit from abroad and of course wanted to see Amsterdam. Cafe de Jaren is a nice place to have a simple lunch. And if you are on the terrace you can see he boats go bye on the river. A simple place on nice location for a quick lunch or a coffee with the famous Dutch... More

Although the place is quite hard to find and the interior is rather minimalist, the meal at Cafe de Jaren was amazing. I would highly recommend the steak and the salmon. All foods are accompanied by salads from a salad bar. Furthermore, the place has a nice view over the channels.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
