Historic and picturesque

Situated by the canal with its own medieval moat and original fortifications, these ramparts are known as Spaniard's Hole. The two towers are positioned either side of a watergate and it is all likely to date back roughly to the fifteenth-century. Quite nice on the eye.

Spaniard's gap
Oct 2018 • Solo
The watergate was built in 1610 some 20 years after a boat topped with peat but with rebels hidden in its hold succeeded in entering the Spanish occupied city. Slipping through a gap in the Spanish defense just north of the present gate happened in 1590 and led to the liberation of Breda. The city was retaken by the Spanish later, but eventually ended up in the hands of the Dutch.

The two towers are much older than the gate and date from 1530. The complex is still monopolized by the Dutch military and is not open to the public.

Picturesque

These two old towers guarding the water inlet to the castle of Breda make for an exquisite view. Probably the best view in Breda, although there are some other nice old spots around there too.

A piece of history - 16th century Breda
Mar 2017 • Solo
The Spanjaardsgat, a 16th-century water gate is one of the major historic buildings in Breda situated close to the old harbour. It is located not far from the Grote Markt - the main square and the Grote Kerk (Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk) Church of Our Lady. There are pubs, cafes and restaurants in the vicinity. In the evening, some enjoy a leisurely stroll along the moat (singel). There are events held here, for example the annual Het Spanjaardsgat Festival Breda - free music concerts. Recommended for history buffs and those who want to learn about the history of Breda.

funny story about the 'Spaniard's hole'
Nov 2016 • Solo
An old tale has it that the whole in the fortified wall around the Breda Castle was opened to smuggle some Spanish soldiers in. That is not true though. The hole was dug some twenty years later in 1610 to let fresh water inside the castle walls.

Just for historicie
May 2016 • Friends
The Spanjaardsgat is just a water gate that lies between the Garnet Tower and Duiventoren Castle of Breda in the center of Breda,That's all that it is. You can only see it from a distance.
It's only for historic minded tourists worthwhile

Old gate
Jul 2016 • Solo
One of the city old gate, one of the first to come accross right at the end of Valkenberg not far from the train station. Several boats docked there and few photo opportunities.
