A St. Pietersberg walk should include a stop at Hoeve Lichtenberg
Jan 2020
The Hoeve Lichtenberg is situated right on top of the St. Pietersberg next to the ENCI Quarry and should be included when enjoying a St. Pietersberg walk. The views from the tower are stunning and give you a good overview of Maastricht and the surrounding area.

The history of ‘hoeve Lichtenberg’ starts around 1212 when Hugues de Pierrepont prins-bisschop of Luik builds castle Lichtenberg at a strategic spot on the Sint Pietersberg. In 1455 Jan (II) van Eijnatten starts a hermitage at the castle and in 1489 Prinsbisschop Jan van Horne starts a convent and church with the name Franciscaner Observanten. In 1568 during the siege of Maastricht the house and it’s surroundings served as HQ for the duke of Alva. The convent is ruined in 1578.
Everything was rebuild in 1639 by Recollecten and the place losses it’s military function. The Recollecten transform it into a fortified farm. The top part is made of mergel (marl stone) and the tower you can still see dates from that period.
After a fire in 1747 the only thing that remains is the old tower. In 1870 a large shed is build using the old foundations. The current house still has some elements from the 17th century. The gate house and stables date from the 18th and 19th century.

You're not missing out if you don't go
Aug 2017 • Friends
The walk to the ruin is quite a nice one when the weather is good. If you don't feel like walking however, there's really no need to go here, you're not missing out on anything. This is not a very impressing ruin/castle. The view from the tower is nice, though.

Still in very good shape

This is not a ruin, the structure and buildings are still intact. You can go up the tower to enjoy the view from the lookout position

The climb up the tower is worth the great view on a clear day and it's an easy short walk to get there.

Great time at the Castle Ruin Lichtenberg
Oct 2014
We had unexpectedly good time at the castle as well as found this experience very educational. There are a lot of tiny nooks and crannies kind of spots to explore here. We loved the little staircase that led to the top of the tower where you can see the nice view of the town of Maastricht. The park near castle is great too. Spending time in the area was very enjoyable, definitely time well spent.
