Excellent tour day

We had a splendid Amherst tour. The guide was very good prepared, and seemed to know everything. We as audience had a hard time asking challenging questions. Good mix between "dry facts" and funny or emotional stories. Good price. No complaints.

An awesome experience.

Joel Stoppels is a guide for Battlefield Tours. He is extremely knowledgeable in WW2 events in and around the Groningen area. He has completed considerable research on the battles as well as the specific regiments and armies who were engaged in battle. My wife and I were visiting the area and on short notice he agreed to provide us with a walking tour around the Groningen area and speak specifically about the Battle of Groningen in which the Canadians were involved in April, 1945. He mixed the tour with personal stories of both the Canadians and Germans. While conducting the walking tour he would stop at particular intersections or buildings to explain specific engagements or show us damage to buildings which is still present. Joel is an excellent presenter and guide, making this tour one of the highlights during our visit to Groningen. I would highly recommend contacting this company and specifically Joel if you are in the Groningen area and interested in a walking tour of the conflict areas during the war.

Excellent tour of sites in the Battle of the Scheldt
Apr 2018 • Family
We wanted to see the sites of the Battle of the Scheldt in which a family member had served. Battlefield Tours (Netherlands) referred us to their local contact - an expert on the battle - and we are delighted that they did. Jan and Renat organised an excellent two-day tour - in English - which gave us a vivid and very full picture of the battle in which our relative played a part. We would unhesitatingly recommend a tour with Jan as guide to anyone who is interested. He took great care to ensure that our particular interests and angle were catered for. Brilliant.

Thank you for your review. Our company is not called Leger ... we only organize tours in the Netherlands. I think you have misplaced the review, maybe you can find the company Leger on Tripadvisor.

Finding the Dutch Family
Jul 2016 • Couples
My husband and I just spent one magical week in Groningen. The focus of our visit was to spend time with the granddaughters of the woman who billeted my father for 6 months in 1945. We found this family with the help of the Groningen City Hall. Spending time with them was a joy! We did many activities together, including a Battlefields Tour with military historian Joel Stoppels. He was recommended to us by the Dutch Defence Attache in Ottawa, Canada. For days after the tour he gave us of Groningen I kept exclaiming how good it was. Joel is supremely knowledgable, passionate, with excellent presentation skills. His voice is rich and clear with the projection of a stage actor. He lives and breaths this history, that is certain. The best tour I have ever experienced. The Dutch family came with us and they even learned some things they had not known. I am glad that this tour was a part of the tribute we payed to my father by coming to Groningen. Thank you Joel for adding meaning and weight to our visit.

Encyclopedic knowledge
Oct 2015 • Couples
Joel has an amazing knowledge of the Battle of Gronignen, in addition to the entire Canadian campaign through The Netherlands and prior. My girlfriend and I both had Grandfathers who fought in The Netherlands, and he provided a great deal of detail in addition to the tour of Groningen of where their units were fighting towards the end of the war, even assisting us in finding the house that my girlfriend's grandfather lived in following the war. It was an amazing experience...definitely a must for anyone with interest in the Canadian campaign in The Netherlands. Joel is so highly regarded that he provided local guidance for a documentary on the battle being put together by the History Channel in Canada.

Top notch! Thanks Joel

We requested a private tour in English (get more people if you want to share the cost), and Joel walked us through the neighbourhoods following the routes of the Canadians through the Northern part of the city, ending at the Provincial house where the German commander finally surrendered after 4 days. Joel took the time to explain, answer questions, and point out features still visible today. Very knowledgeable.

MOST AMAZING EXPERIENCE! INCREDIBLE! ONCE IN A LIFE TIME!!!
Jun 2015 • Family
Joel provided us with one of the very best tours I have ever experienced. It was truly a day that I will never forget. My father and I travelled to Groningen, the city where my grandfather was fighting on the last days of WWII. I wanted to learn more about the battle of Groningen and hoped to learn a few things about what my grandfather may have experienced there. I found Joel online and learned that he is a very well educated and well respected tour guide. He kindly offered to give my father and I a special tour. Prior to arriving we only knew a few things about my grandfather’s time in the war from what he wrote in his life story before he passed away at 90 years old. He was part of the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade- Le Regiment De Maisonneuvre. In his life story he wrote that he was living in the sugar beet factory on May 8 when the war ended. With just this little bit of information, Joel really blew us away. He had done so much research and had incredible knowledge. He walked us through a special tour that followed in my grandfather’s footsteps.

Joel took us to the sugar beet factory where we learned that my grandfather’s regiment had taken the factory from the Germans. He showed us pictures of how the factor looked and the guns that were used by both sides. He described everything beautifully. We also walked through the city experiencing each part of the battle and following the path of my grandfather’s regiment discussing each battle. The stories Joel told us helped us to picture what those battles were truly like. As we walked I could picture my grandfather as part of each story he told. Every piece of information was backed with facts and pictures, which made me realize that every bit was true.

Overall, this tour exceeded my expectations more than I can ever describe. Joel went far beyond what I could have hoped for. He made the experience one that I will never forget. I know that my grandfather would have been both impressed and proud.

Joel is a wonderful person, friendly, fun, and extremely knowledgeable.

Joel—Thank you so much for everything! Your tour was a highlight for me. Something I will never forget.
