Windmills, Tulips & Herring!
Apr 2015
For our last day in Sneek we asked our hotel, Hotel Stadsherberg, to arrange a driver for the four of us in our group. Gert-Jan, owner of Taxi Sneek, arrived promptly and with a new, very clean & comfortable van. When he asked what we wanted to see the answer was a typical American response - windmills, tulips and something that a local might do. We also asked about a small town nearby, Langweer, where my husband was able to track down distant family. As we headed south Gert-Jan shared history and current events of Sneek and Friesland. He was very personable and knowledgeable. Our first stop was De Rat Windmill in IJlst. Gert-Jan spoke with the men working the lumber mill and we were able to have a tour even though the official season opening wasn't until the following day. The windmill was beautiful, but the inner workings and use of the windmill was fascinating. Well worth a visit! Next we continued south to the tulip fields which we were very fortunate to see since the season when they are in bloom is brief. Gert-Jan answered questions, told stories and was happy to stop whenever we asked. Gert-Jan asked if we had tried herring yet and when we said no he drove us to Urk, 'a seaside town with the best fish'. The herring was prepared within minutes right in front of us, rolled in chopped onions and handed to us on a paper tray. As we held the tail and the fish high, as instructed, we ate the herring above our heads. It was delicious! My husband who does not like fish ate his in entirety. As we drove out of Urk we saw huge fishing vessels and heard more about area. Our final stop was Langweer. My husband showed Gert-Jan a postcard sent to his mother from Langweer in 1948. He recognized the house on the postcard and drove us to it. The house is the Parsonage beside the church where we found relatives in the graveyard. It was very special. Our time in Sneek was amazing. This day spent with Gert-Jan of Taxi Sneek was filled with incredible memories that made our final day the best.
