Impressive mansion with remarkable gardens. Also a nice place to have a cup of coffee. Also check for special events such as Monumentendag

Compared to many other period castles or mansions, this one happens to be very well furnished with period equipment: children's toys, musical instruments including an organ, kitchenware, but few books except some Bibles. The wood carvings over the chimneys are remarkable. The paintings of the previous occupants are of second or third order, but are still part of the decorum.... More

This is the best audio tour we had for years - Museum pedagogy at its best. It used carefully selected text and actors to introduce the Mansion in a very vivid way, e.g. incoporating French words here and there. The site is worth a visit for people interested in history and in everyday story. The house made a feeling of... More

We were lucky to tour this area of the Netherlands while on a layover in Amsterdam. The "castle" or mansion museum gave us great insight into how the gentry of the day lived. Some of our own ancestors were "day laborers" or "maids" in the area, so it was fun to imagine they may have walked these lands at one... More

We visited here recently on a dull day and unfortunately it rained for much of the time we were walking in the beautiful gardens. On a better day we would have spent much longer outside. The mansion itself is in good condition with each room well marked and displayed. Like many places in Holland unfortunately they don't accept credit cards.

The northern province of Groningen can point proudly to a number of heritage mansions, named "borg", which are well preserved and appointed as interesting museum or showcase of the life of wealthy families some centuries ago. The Menkemaborg (the stately home of the Menkema family) in Uithuizen is such a heritage mansion. Arriving in Uithuizen at the Menkemaborg, a parking... More

Life of the rich in the countryside. Not very large, but enough to see in this pretty fortified house.

We enjoyed our visit here and it's worth a 20 minute stop if you're in the area. The castle is well-preserved (you can only tour the ground floor) and has some beautiful period furniture on display. We had lunch in the onsite restaurant located in the former stables and it was fantastic - a very kind server and the food... More

Visited on a cold Spring day staying just outside of Groningen at my friend's house. Having never visited the Netherlands before, I was impressed at how all the staff, signs and leaflets were all in English as well as Dutch and felt welcomed by the staff. Visiting on a cold day limits your activities to inside the house but it... More

Really lovely place to visit on a summer's afternoon. Take a stroll round interesting gardens, view the house with its interesting rooms and furniture - easy to imagine what it would be like as a family home - and enjoy lunch or afternoon tea at the good café/restaurant where it was clear locals were calling as well.
