Winterthur has a calmer atmosphere than nearby Zurich and we enjoyed strolling this street with shops, restaurants, cafes and a fountain. Some service vehicles can also access the street but generally it is a great place to take a walk, have lunch or dinner, and view the town.

This is the place to go if you want to just walk without traffic and be able to shop and go for a coffee or meal

There is really everything available and one is central to museum and more

We went to Winterthur for the museums (particularly the Oskar Reinhardt Villa) and stayed for the shopping! Unlike Zurich the lower rents means lots of independent shops can operate, with unique, local handmade products. We bought lovely artesan souvenirs in the Art & Craft shop in Metzgasse in the heart of the old town, and then some French delicacies to snack on in Pain et Fromage just around the corner. The pedestrianized, cobbled streets are full of cafes and restaurants, as well as museums and churches, which makes it a lovely place to meander round and shop, eat and drink in. All in all a little gem of a town.

Nice place to walk around. Suggested to enter to side streets too. Big choice of shops with the Switzerland touch. Suggested to stop for a cafe to feel the atmosphere

I just like to have a walk, a coffee or just to 'waist' my time her occasionally. I usually park my car at the train station, or if I want to have next to Park Hotel.

The mix of the cobblestone sidewalks, old and colorful buildings and fountains make this a really special area of the city. The place is filled with clothing, retail, café/restaurants, book stores and more. At lunch times and on the weekend the Marktgasse can get pretty hectic with all the hordes of people gathering to shop and enjoy the atmosphere. It’s a nice long walk down and and back, but take some of the side streets to see what they offer as well.

Like all the little towns in Switzerland, this also has the medieval feeling to it. We were there on the swiss national day, so everywhere was closed except for some restaurants. Overall, i think it would be a busy area during normal days.
