The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

Don’t miss the cold real road to the top for the fantastic views of the Matterhorn. You also can take your skis and ski down from here, nice place to have a snack and a coffee.

Take the train up to Gornergrat and you won't regret it! The ride is beautiful, and the views of the alps and glaciers from the top is incredible. There is a restaurant up there, and it's well worth it to eat lunch with the Matterhorn...More

A good train ride up. Basically to view the Mount Matterhorn, must stop by Riffelsee, one stop before Gornergrat, walk about 10 min to a nearby lake, you will have majestic great view of Mt Matterhorn and its reflection on lake. Do not miss this...More

We took a train from Zermatt and enjoyed view of Matterhorn all the way. Once arrived, we enjoyed the breathtaking view of Gornergrat glacier plus Matterhorn view. It’s definitely worth visiting once in your life!

Wonderful place to visit even if you don’t ski. The scenery is just wonderful and to see the mighty Matterhorn at close quarters is just something - I have no words to describe it!

We (2 couples in our 60s) visited Zermatt for downhill hiking. Our trip to Gornergrat was the best of our stay! We took the cogwheel train out of Zermatt to the top stop and hiked from the train station to Riffelberg for lunch. We continued...More

Was there on a cloudy day. Went from Furi to Riffelberg, and then on the cogwheel to Gornegrat and down back to Zermatt on the cogwheel.

We travelled up the mountain and it was a good journey looking out the window taking in the variety of scenery, snow filled mountains, a great waterfall and much more. The Train does stop along the way for anyone who wants to hike up.

SPEED: in my country the train that takes me normally from sea ground to 767 m above sea level (Sinaia) takes about one hour and 26 min, not in winter time, when delays are common and long and annoying. Imagine how much it would take...More

It is a cog railway rather than a cable car. It runs every 30minutes or so most of the day. There are also some 4 stops on the way up (and down) so you can walk some of the way and take the train for the rest. An afternoon... More
