The Eiger Trail is an easy-to-moderate difficulty hiking trail that takes about 3 hours to do. You can go up or down, and we decided to go down — meaning we started at Eigergletscher and ended at Alpiglen.
The views are beautiful and we took lunch to eat along the way. There was also a restaurant at Alpiglen, and we had some ice cream there.
The trail is well marked and easy to follow. And if you Google the hike, you’ll find lots more detail on what to see or do.

We just hiked the Eiger from the top of the Eiger Trail to Alpiglen, having taking 2 trains from Lauterbrunen to get to the trailhead. The trail has gorgeous views the entire way and we were lucky to have good weather, but I would not call the hike easy. We are experienced hikers from Colorado with all of the appropriate gear and we found it a bit challenging in spots, although doable for anyone in decent shape with hiking boots, poles and rain gear. It only rained briefly near the bottom. Also don’t believe the signs that say it takes 2 hours. That would only we try for young, very fit and co rodent hikers. The trail is mainly a bit of a leader across the mountain at the too, so people who don’t feel comfortable with heights may not like it. My partner was uncomfortable at first but warmed up to it. There is nothing at Alpiglen so bring food and water. It is complicate to get to the start of the trail and back to where you are staying unless you are in Grindelwald, but the SBB app will give you the route and you can buy the train tickets. It is not cheap, but definitely worth it.

On the 12th of September 2022 I walked the Eiger trail with my son. Whe started at the Eiger Gletscher and walked all the wat (~12 km) till Gletscherschlucht. High up the mountains with great vieuws. The trail is not to difficult, though you need trekking shows. Sometimes it's steep, but it was not slippery. At the end to Gletschersluft we walked trough the forrest. About 1000 meters downsizing. It online costs us tired legs afterwards. We finished by walking through the Glacier canyon.

A fabulous mountain that captivates me from every angle. I love looking up at it from Grindelwald, love seeing the sheer North face from the Eiger Express cable cars and love seeing it from the Eiger Glacier. Very impressive.

The infamous Eiger North Face can be observed really well when walking down from the Kleine Scheidegg mountain to Grindelwald. You can very easily get up there by train. Along the way you see the nakeshift monument for the many mountaineers whom did not return alive ...

The Eiger Trail is a must go for all first timers to the Swiss Alps. Pack on some solid hiking shoes and be on your way (hiking poles are not needed but they can be real handy when descending). My girlfriend and I hiked upwards (Alpiglen - Eigergletscher) and the journey was definitely more taxing but it is always nicer to take in the breathtaking view as a reward for all that effort. There was probably only one other hiker whom we saw doing the same route as us all day. The entire hike took us about 4 odd hours but don't use that as a gauge. For the most part, we were admiring the surrounding beauty and just taking loads of photos.
The trail is quite nicely marked so you won't get lost. Just be sure to follow them. Be prepared to pack lots of water and food if you are doing the hike up. We stocked up lots of energy bars and 2 bottles of water. Apparently, we didn't have enough water and took a risk by drinking from the streams - quite refreshing I must say. It was quite the experience to have every hiker greet you as they pass by you too. We had to cross ridges which otherwise would not have been possible once the ice had melted.
Towards the end, the weather started to change for the worse. It started drizzling with thunder echoing throughout. As we reached the end, we spotted a couple taking their dog for a walk in the opposite direction but never saw them again. It is a long distance to the Alpiglen station and I can only hope they made it safe. It was raining and droplets actually turned to ice - quite surreal to be able to experience something like this.
The slow paced hike we took nearly bit us in the foot. We were the only ones at the Eigergletscher station and it was worrying for a moment as the train which passed by the station did not stop. The thought of having to spend the night at the station did crept into my thoughts but fortunately it turned out that the Gondola that passed us was not picking up passengers. We had to wait for approximately another 45 minutes but we eventually got onto the final Gondola for the day. Amazing experience.

I've experienced this world-class hike in June and the end of September, both times hiking with loved ones.
June brought lovely flowers and cows, their bells jangling, wandering about the rocky meadows. If you start the path at Kleine Scheidigg, and head downward, you'll have a wonderful treat awaiting at Alpiglen--a quaint restaurant/coffee place transected by the very path! Only steps away is the regional train station, which will efficiently chug chug you back to the town where you catch your next connection or sleep off your aches and pains.
The September hike brought icy conditions and patches of snow that showed me foolish for wearing running shoes, but I managed to avoid a fall, which could've led to a break or strain, but there's no point on the path where you could fall to your death, at least that I saw. Gone is the lush summer grass, but present in this season is the grayness, the fierceness, the mystery of the Eiger and the other peaks.
Maybe one day I'll hike this trail in spring. Since I don't ski, winter is out:(

You wont be able to do the first part of the trail because of construction of the gongola station at Nord Wand.

We hiked the Eiger Trail in October 2017. We took the train to the top of the trailhead and made our way down to Alpiglen, where we took the train into Grindelwald. The hike took about three hours. We could have gone faster but the descent was a little harder on our knees than we had expected so we rested a little more than usual. The views were unbelievable! The Wetterhorn mountain ahead was spellbinding and being below the face of the Eiger was incredible. We stopped at one point to refill our bottles with fresh glacier water. Probably the purest water I've ever tasted. The trail is well marked and is in good condition. There are areas where small gravel on the trail can make it a little slippery, but there is no boulder hopping or scaling of any kind. Hikers should wear appropriate shoes and bring food and water. It was considerably cooler on the trail than we expected and it was in the shade of the Eiger throughout the morning so we were glad we had dressed warmly. Oh, and bring your camera. The views of the mountains and the valley below are nothing short of spectacular.

“I VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… and saw it as I explored the area- from Schynige Platte, Mannlichen, Kleine Scheidigg and then from the Eigergletcher station and as we passed it in the Eiger Express cable car. I also saw it from Mürren and Allmendhubel (although from there it was quite cloudy 🌥)
In 2014, we hiked the trail under that sheer north face wall of solid rock, but not this time.
TIPS
It is hard to miss and only the most hardy will attempt to climb it.

Hi all. Wondering if you can and should go one way on the Eiger Express and one way through Kleine Scheidegg? If so, is one better going up and one going down or what do you recommend? Sides to sit on for best view? We are staying in Wengen so I read you can take a cable car from Wengen to Grindelwald. Any info on that? Thanks very much!

Fellow travellers!
We are travelling from Zurich to Grindlewald and returning to Zurich via lucerne over a 5 day period. We also will be doing a day trip on the jungfrau railway during this time. Can anyone suggest the cheapest rail ticket to purchase to cover this travel?

Hi all,
We are in Grindelwald in January and want to take the railway up to the north face of the Eiger. Can anyone tell us how long this takes and how much it costs? Once up there how long should we allow to take in the sights? (We are trying to work out if we can do this and then do 1/2 day of skiing in 1 day)

The train journey is around 2 hours each way. Price is roughly CHF 120 return. You can buy a discount pass that gets a 50% reduction - worthwhile if you will be doing a reasonable amount of travelling in Switzerland. I would not plan on doing much skiing- after the tome and expense, you will want to spend a decent amount of time at the Jungfraujoch. Make sure you choose a nice day - it's a lot of money if you only see the inside of a cloud at GE top.
