This was an amazing gondola ride with some beautiful mountain views. Just sit back and enjoy the ride as the cable car takes you up in three stages from the station in Grindelwald to First (7106 ft. above sea level). If you want, you can get out at any of the three stations and wander around, start a hike, or hop in another car and head to the top. During the 25-minute ride you’re guaranteed some breathtaking views of the north face of the Eiger. Once you arrive at First, you are provided a list of activities to choose from: some wonderful hikes, the cliff walk, various zip-lines, downhill scooter or cart rides, paragliding, or just sitting on the terrace of Berggasthaus First Restaurant. From the restaurant terrace, we enjoyed watching the hang gliders take off and were surprised that they were coming so close to the side of the mountain and the restaurant as they flew around. It seemed like they were zooming by so close that you could nearly just reach out and touch them. My 9-year-old granddaughter loved the whole experience. It was a little expensive, (about $30 US per person) but well worth it. Some say that the trip to the top of First on a nice day is better that the train to the top of Jungfrau, which we did not do. This is the stuff vacation dreams are made from. Switzerland is truly beautiful, and we loved our stay in Grindelwald.

We took the gondola up to First on a day with a sand storm from the Sahara desert, so the views weren't as good as expected. The First Flyer zipline was closed due to snow/sand/rain. The cliff walk was fun. Hopefully next time the weather will be better...

This was the first time in a cable car for my granddaughter and she loved it! We all did. The weather was ideal with bright blue skies and perfect white snow. We are not skiers but we enjoyed several hours at the top just experiencing the scenery. I would highly recommend this trip.

Cashier was completely rude and loud when speaking to me for no reason. Unnecessary attitude. This is the only rude experience I have had throughout my interaction throughout Europe. Will not return to First.

We took the Grindelwald First cable car to the top of the mountain. The views were wonderful. At the top we walked along the trail and had lunch at on of the mountain top restaurants.

Absolutely mesmerising views from here. You'll surely be amazed with mountains views all around. You can try the cliff walk which takes you around the cliff in a bottom see though pathway/Bridge. Also we recommend you to take the walk up to the Bachalpse lake. The views from there also really amazing.

Grindelwald First offers loads to do.
The cable car station is just off the Main Street and it is then a long, incredibly picturesque, cable car ride up the hill to grindelwald first. There are lots of activities on offer at the summit, including electric bikes, carting, a zip wire and an elevated walkway high above the valley floor looking back to the stunning snow capped alps in the background.
It is also a great kicking off point for loads of stunning hikes.

Why is it 64Fr return up here?? i understand switzerland is an expensive country but this is absolutely extortionate! a beautiful and safe ride that nonetheless leaves you desperately short of change once you get off and even contemplate the cliff walk or activities

So much to see and do - for starters, the hiking is hauntingly beautiful, with lots of cows and their charming cowbells along the way, and the views of the majestic Swiss Alps (mountain peaks, glaciers, moraines, all of it) are unbeatable. Also lots of adventure, for different ages of children and adults. One unexpected delight for us was the trotti-bike (sort of a hybrid scooter / bicycle) down the mountain and through the village of Grindelwald.

Expensive - but this is Switzerland but the mountain is well done. Not a great experience on the flier - very slow moving line. However everything else was quick, well run and loads of fun. Our highlight the mountain carts which anyone can do.

Hi. I was browsing and found somewhere that First Flyer is not available in March. I would be visiting Switzerland in first week of March and would like to experience Zip Ride and Cliff Walk. Can you please let me know if these are open in first week of March? Also does Swiss Travel Pass provide any benefit at First?
Thanks

Grindelwald First is the ski area accessed by the Gondola from town. The area should be open early March if they have snow. You’re ski pass allows you to ride the zip line. Have fun and enjoy Grindelwald.

Sept will be fabulous, no snow... Try and get up there before 10am and beat the crowds. We took the gondola up and then walked half way down, then caught the gondola again to Grindelwald.

In Zermatt kann man immer Skifahren auch im Sommer. Jedoch oft nur am Morgen. Je nachdem kann man auch in Engelberg noch Skifahren. Natürlich sind nur 1 oder 2 Pisten auf dem Gletscher offen.

Myself and my two daughters are traveling to visit schilthorn summit, we will be flying from Dublin. We have the option to fly to either Zurich, Geneva or Basel. We are thinking of basing ourselves in grindelwald. Any advise on train travel or airport to fly to would be appreciated

We flew into Geneva and used the train from there and changed in bern and then again in Interlaken OST all very very easy. I downloaded the app on my phone and it basically told me everything as we travelled along. Xx

Update: I have went to Faulhorn and back in the winter during January! This is to update my question for any future travellers from First to Faulhorn, who are interested in sledding from Faulhorn. Yes, there are sled rentals on First. You can also visit First Cliff Walk from First, then start your hike to faulhorn (we took about 3 to 4 hours to reach Faulhorn, depending on your stamina and walking speed upslope on snow. ) There are no rentals on Faulhorn. Only rentals on First.
Do you ride free on cable car to First on the Bernese Oberland pass as well as the Jungfrau pass?

We had the Jungfrau pass and yes, we rode free on the cable car from Grindelwald to First. However, that activities in First (scooters/ziplines/trottibikes, etc) are not included with the Jungfrau pass.
