Took a train trip from Lucerne, which was nice and not too much money, but they DO NOT make cheese for the public, in July 2022, even though advertised as such.
They have a nice shiny 'display' where they used to have demonstrations, but the lady at the counter said they hadn't had public show for a while (not sure how long)
Nice cheese shop if you want to buy.
Pretty sure they DO make cheese on the premises (we say pallets and other 'factory like' things), but not to observe.
So, be careful if you take a trip here for that purpose.
The town is a nice short walk. EVERYTHING appears to be geared to hiking and biking easily accessed directly from the town

After our lunch at the Engelberg Alpenclub and learning that the cheese used in our fondue came from the local monastery, we had to go see it. This is Switzerland’s only publically accessible artisan cheesemaking production within a monastery. Inside the monastery store, we watched cheese being hand-produced and regional milk being crafted into specialities, such as the famous “Engelberger Klosterglocke.” The monastery was built in 1120 and to date there are still approximately 30 monks living and working there. Very interesting place to visit in Engelberg.

An imposing building with a fascinating ecclesiastical and political history. And the cafe has a live cheese-making demonstration.

Engelberg's Benedictine Monastery was established in 1120 and rebuilt in 1740 after a fire burned the original complex down. We toured the historic abbey with a knowledgeable monk, and it was a very interesting couple of hours! Because the next day the monastery would be closed due to a religious holiday, we were able to tour the previous evening after hours. We therefore missed the cheesemaking unit, but instead were treated to a tour of the library with its ancient, handwritten and hand illustrated texts by medieval writers and even Martin Luther...wow! We also were lucky to sit and observe the last part of vespers with the monks chanting in a gorgeous sanctuary. Although the library and vespers are not normally part of the tour, I highly recommend touring this historic monastery and enjoying its history as explained by our awesome guide (an abbey monk). Please see photos. We lucked out by seeing a double rainbow outside the abbey!

I just had the opportunity this afternoon to visit this church and monastery. Both within and without there was attention to detail and beauty. The grounds were adorned with lovely flowers and gardens. Inside the artistry and craftsmanship throughout was breathtaking. There were several beautiful side chapels and alters. The paintings, sculpture, architectural beauty all served to create an atmosphere of dignity and holiness.

I would definitely make this one of your must see stops when visiting Engelberg.

Came to Engleberg to go to summit of Mt. Titlis. That was awesome. Saw in Fodor's guide that there was an Abbey in Engelberg so walked thru the town (very nice) to the Abbey and went inside. We did not see anyone else there and most of it seemed locked but could go in main church area. If you have the time, was a nice walk on a nice day.

fully restored church of the local abbey. Beautiful rococco style. Worth while visiting and attending a church service. A guided tour to the abbey and church is available almost every day.
I spend a few weeks every year for more than 40 years in Engelberg and the church still remains a highlight.

If you are visiting Engelberg and feel the need for a calming space to collect your thoughts, then I would recommend a visit to the monastery church located about 500m from the railway station. The fine ornate Baroque interior is very impressive and the atmosphere provides an instant stress reducer, that is until the organ starts up in all its magnificence.
