Built between 1903 and 1910 by Genevan architect Marc Camoletti, with the aim of regrouping under one roof a number of dispersed public collections, the Musée d'art et d'histoire is one of Switzerland's most important encyclopaedic museums. Boasting over half a million objects including a number of major works and unique series that have made it an institution of international stature, the museum maintains a permanent exhibition of a selection of itsapplied arts, fine arts and archaeology collections. Regional archaeological discoveries, Egyptian and Classical antiquities, artworks, furniture, arms, musical instruments, paintings and sculptures all bear witness to 15,000 years of history. A renovation and enlargement project is currently underway and constitutes one of the major challenges facing the Museum over the coming years.

Head to the ground floor for local history

While the museum is located in a big and amazing building, but the collection is unimpressive, it is clear that they are struggling with filling lots of empty space, so they put everything there: medieval castle room, armor, paintings, Egyptian artefacts. The layout is super confusing with absolutely no guidance excepts for the list next to elevator telling what is... More

We were after a museum covering the history of the area and we're sure if this would hit the spot expecting it to be more of a British Museum type collection. However, the basement had a nice collection of items covering the development/archaeology of the surrounding from the Neolithic through to the immediate post-Roman period. It could have perhaps benefited... More

Good location, big museum, contains among others several masterpieces of Swiss and French painters and a few of Rodin's sculptures. No rush, and enjoy the art works of different cultures, epochs and genres.

I didn't have much time to enjoy this visit as i was only in Geneva for a weekend, but i really like everything i saw here. From things i have seen at other museums (like mummies and Egyptian artifacts) to things i saw for the first time, this museum does have an impressive collection. I recommend a visit, especially since... More

My mother was visiting for the weekend so we decided to visit the museum and then have lunch in the old town. There is a huge amount to see in the museum so we decided to focus on the beaux-arts. This is an extensive permanent collection of art, with many Swiss painters. The staff were very friendly and helpful, with... More

Typical museum of arts and History, showing a bit of everything regarding multiple things, from Roman times to mummies, from medieval weapons to nice canvases. Highly recommended, free, nice interiors, helpful staff, central location, well explained contents, and a good place to spend few hours.

It is free to see the permanent collection. It includes old masters as well as a small number of french impressionists. Definitelky worth while, especially on an otherwise cold day.

Egyptian or Greek antiquities, 18th century portraits, a large collection of paintings by Hodler, decorative arts from various centuries, silverware... This museum is free, so don't feel compelled to swallow all in one go. The overall quality is excellent and there is no queues, ever. The restaurant Barocco at the lower floor, next to the inner courtyard, is a gem... More

Surprisingly quiet on a Saturday afternoon this Museum caters for pretty much all tastes and most of it is free access. Located off the Place du Bourg de Four in the Russian Church area of Geneva, it is very easy access (either via the Old Town, the buses 1,5 and 8 in Boulevard des Tranchées or with bus 36). A... It is incredible how calm and quiet is the museum. Great pieces in a very-well organized way with completely empty rooms. Totally worth it!!!
