Built between 1903 and 1910 by Genevan architect Marc Camoletti, with the aim of regrouping under one roof a number of dispersed public collections, the Musée d'art et d'histoire is one of Switzerland's most important encyclopaedic museums. Boasting over half a million objects including a number of major works and unique series that have made it an institution of international stature, the museum maintains a permanent exhibition of a selection of itsapplied arts, fine arts and archaeology collections. Regional archaeological discoveries, Egyptian and Classical antiquities, artworks, furniture, arms, musical instruments, paintings and sculptures all bear witness to 15,000 years of history. A renovation and enlargement project is currently underway and constitutes one of the major challenges facing the Museum over the coming years.

I stumbled upon this museum towards the end of my recent stay in Geneva. The museum looks like a old palace and it is several floors high. The interior of the museum is grand with dramatic staircases and some beautiful stained glass windows. The exhibits are varied from Swiss art and artifacts from the medieval age to the Roman, Egyptian... More

While this Museum will not hold extraordinary treausures, it makes for a pleasant afternoon and some hidden treasures: the blue Pastel room for example contains some of the most beautiful paintigs I have ever seen (and yes, I have seen multiple times most of the biggest museums in Europe). Give it a try. We are actually going back tomorrow as... More

I once thought that Geneva, being the center of many UN offices, would have many international people visiting the city and so the museums in Geneva would be automatically designed to cater these international visitors, turned out I was wrong. Most of the information, if not all, were written only in French. There were just one or two corners in... More

A 5 storey palace invites you to surf decorative and fine arts trough centuries: from the prehistoric times to contemporary paintings and sculpture. The exposition is perfectly arranged both chronologically and thematic. Fine art section has a vast collection of Swiss painters, e.g. Liotard and Holder. Rich numismatic collection. Immense hall of arms and armours. If you'd like to have... More

A good place for a rainy day in Geneva, Free entry. I thought the antiquities were the best. Note: most exhibit descriptions are in French only.

We explored this museum on a Saturday and it was not crowded at all. One of the floors is currently closed but the rest of the museum was very interesting. I would give it about three hours to explore adequately.

Most of the museum is free except for 1 exhibit. The free section takes 2-3 hours to explore. The only reason I didn't give 4 dots is the lack of signs in English, but for a free museum in Switzerland I feel sort of bad for holding that against them. I did see signs inside the museum for audio guides,... More
