As a little kid, it was pointed out that if I didn't behave the "Kindlifresser" would take care of me. I knew he would not eat me, but the thought was scary anyway!

Kind of horrifying fountain, dating from the 16th century, that depicts an ogre eating children. Although this fountain shows a horrendous depiction of cruelty, it is famous, so don't forget to check it out when in Bern.

Very interesting fountain, wish I had a guide to tell me a story behind it, but thanks to Google I am not left without knowledge.

You don’t see child eater fountains too often. It is not a very big statue but certainly interesting, especially with some background information from the internet.

The child eater statue is interesting! We were right under it and didn't even realize it. It is not a large as one might expect, but very detailed and colorful. The water was quite refreshing on the very hot day. Many people refilled watr bottles...More

Historic fountains are common in Europe and there are over a dozen in Bern alone, but this one is pretty unique. It depicts an ogre eating small children, which I'd imagine is from a fairy tale that parents long ago used to keep their children...More

The statue is pretty high up so it is difficult to see in detail, unless you know it is there you would just walk past (the are many statues/fountains around Bern). This just warrants a quick snap if you have a zoom, that's about it.

We were told the myth at the information centre about the devouring of children and this fountain certainly depicts that. Really great legend.

Make sure you observe the various water fountains as you wander old town Bern. Each had a diferent sponsor, and so the theme varies, but most impart some sort of moral message. I guess the message here is "be good kids, or somebody will eat...More

It is what it is. Have a native explain the historical significance of this state, it's not something to leap to a conclusion about. Still wierd, though.
