Beautiful old church near the bottom of town. First stop on our visit to Gubbio and with free entry it’s certainly worth checking out

Beautiful!

This is a beautiful place. Art work is gorgeous. It closes during the middle of the day so time your visit. It was peaceful just to sit and take it all in.

Medieval Cathoilc Church with links to St Francis of Assisi
Jun 2018 • Couples
The church was built by 1256 . The site belonged to Giacomello Spadalunga who clothed St Francis after an encounter with a robber. It is a Gothic style church with frescoes. Under the altar are the remains of a blessed nun Franceschina who died in 1255.

Interesting history of Gubbio is told here. One of the main destinations of this town. You should visit.

An important and beautiful church.

Although I can understand where they are coming from, I must say that I can't agree with those reviewers who say that this is a stark or plain church. In my view this is a rather lovely example of a 13th century church, and it is unusual in Gubbio as it is the only church in town (and there are many!) with a nave and two aisles.

Its major historical significance is that it was built immediately after the death of St Francis on land owned by the Gubbian family who gave him sanctuary when he fled Assisi. There are some magnificent works of art to enjoy here but for me, pride of place must go to the 14th and 15th century frescoes that were revealed during renovation work between 1926 and 1938. Fabulous!

This church is built on the home of St Francis' closest friend who took him in after he escaped from Assisi.

The church is beautiful with lovely paintings and decorations
In many ways I preferred it to the Basilica in Assisi

A must see

I came here right after breakfast and I was in love with the moment I stepped through the doors with my husband. The columns and high ceilings made the place feel so welcoming. I think the chipped artwork makes it look fabulous but to me the best part of the whole place was the marble alter. Prefect in every aspect

Medieval Gothic Church - No Climbing Involved

Just off the car park this church is almost as old as St. Francis himself. Though it needs some restoration its worth a visit and a respite from the summer sun. Great photo op with Francis statue outside (esp. for the kids).

Great place to explore
Jul 2016 • Family
Park at the bottom of the town on the free gravel Car park and then walk up through the town exploring the lovely narrow streets. You must go up the Funivia just for the experience and to enjoy an ice cream and the view at the top. we managed to take our 4yr old with us in one cage! 17euros return for all of us. We loved Gubbio and were there from 3-6pm to avoid heat.

Beautiful church

In a town with nothing but steps, this building is a pleasant walk from the parking lot. The Gothic building is rather spare, but evocative. Some of the interior decoration has suffered over the ages. All of this means it is not one of the great churches in Europe--but it is worth dropping in and absorbing the ambiance.
