Patron Saint of Saint Francisco
Jul 2021
This place is the Artistic jewel of Umbria. It was our next stop after visiting Perugia.
There are so many steps to climb to the basilica, especially on a hot July day.
Massive all stone structure, was famous for assisting the poor.
Nowadays it is a high end tourist mecca with gift shops and restaurants.

Amazing Church/ tourist trap town
Jul 2021 • Couples
This is by no means a bad review of San Francisco church. It is a truly beautiful and inspiring place. My wife and I are both Catholic and were both almost moved to tears at the sight of St. Francis' tomb. That said we have been all over Europe and Italy in particular and have never seen such a tourist trap as is Assisi!. You can't walk 10meters without passing a "souvenir" shop ,all selling the same stuff.
The quality of the food almost without exception is terrible. ( One notable exception is the Foro Romano cafeteria. It's food is exceptionally good and relatively inexpensive). There is no in town transportation except very expensive cabs which leaves you having to walk up and down long steep hill all day. We're glad we went and saw the church but the town in spite of its great views is a huge let down!

Must see

Visiting the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi is a must. It is free to get in and it is beautiful. Make sure to see the vista points as well as his tomb.

What a beauty!!!!

Now, during the Advent season, Assisi projections are shown in various places. At the basilica, San Ruffino or the Minerva temple ... one more beautiful than the others.
It is harvest time for the olives that produce the "green" gold.

I love Assisi and the Assisans

Absolutely beautiful
Sep 2020
We managed to visit Assisi on a relatively clear day in mid-September.
The Basilica is stunning. There are two churches - on two levels as well as St Francis' crypt on a level below. The lower level church is perhaps the more impressive. The Basilica opens up onto a lawn covered court yard. From here you venture into the town itself.
Plenty of Car Parks charged at reasonable rates.

EXPECTATIONS GADLY NOT MET!
Sep 2020 • Couples
We visited Assisi in mid Sept. Not been remotely religious and having been to sites like the Black Madonna in Guadalupe, the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, the Golden Buddha in Bangkok etc etc and worst of all St Peters in Rome, where the crass commercialism and cattle like herding of people through the facility really shocked me, I was concerned that Assisi would be a similar experience. Yes there was the usual religious trapping shops and really horrendous pieces of St Francis memorabilia ( see St Francis with red lips pic) but the Basicalla, the church and the Tomb proved to be beautiful, peaceful, simple and spiritually uplifting. A really great experience and one that I can recommend. I guess that in the height of the season in a normal year it might be all overcrowded and busy but nevertheless there remained something very simple and soothing to the soul about the Basicalla in particular. Just the setting of the town alone is stunning. Free entry into the church ( unlike St Peters ) won me over immediately and the simplicity and spiritual nature of the church and the tomb were very moving. Well worth a few hours of anyone’s time. The only downside....the escalators from the carpark to the street weren’t working ....curses.!

It's an astonishing place: amazing! Don't miss the chance of this spiritual experience. Church's and chapels which made the history of art. It's totally free (except for parking).

Religious and architectural beauty
Aug 2020 • Family
If you are religious this is a sacred place where you can find peace, if you are not you will see one of the brightest jewels of italy. The architecture of the basilica is fantastic, the paintings of the two basilica s are masterpieces of italian history. It is one of the most iconic places in the entire world.
