A temple and a church put together! Very scenic.
Sep 2021
This structure was a temple , probably dedicated to Hercules, later converted to a church. The union between the two is harmonious and very enjoyable.

The former minerva temple in Assisisi was used to worship a heathen god. So what to do? Call it Mary above Minerva and you make two strikes in one hand. The temple is a church now. However there is no doubt it was a temple

Roman and Medieval Together
Jul 2019
It was interesting to see the juxtaposition between an ancient roman temple and the medieval church it was converted into. The entrance is mostly intact from roman times, and the interior is really pretty. Worth a quick stop on your way to St. Francis' church.

Outside isn't much to look at, but the interior of this ancient pagan temple is a beauty to behold. Worth the stop

Nice, Small Church
Apr 2019
I walked past this building several times without knowing what it was, until I entered one fine morning to take a peek. The exterior was an ancient Roman style, whilst the interior was Baroque. Inside with just an altar and several rows of short pews. I later learnt that the church was built over the former Temple of Minerva (hence the name and different styles). Entrance to this church is free and photography is allowed, unlike most churches in Assisi.

Church inside a Roman temple
Jul 2019
The Roman columns are evident as is the old wall. That it remains is probably due to it being used as a church. The Mother of Christ over (the Roman goddess ) Minerva is more than symbolic. Small by Italian church standards but the decor is ornate.

FORMER ROMAN TEMPLE
Mar 2019 • Couples
You first notice the 6-column portico that was a 1 BC Roman temple. The temple has been repurposed as a church. The interior is small, but very ornate with a baby blue hue highlighted by gold leaf. A must visit when you are in Piazza del Comune.

A Roman temple still in use!
May 2019 • Friends
Minerva was a mythylogical Roman goddess. Santa Maria, the Mother of Christ, figures prominently in the Christian faith that replaced the Roman gods. Santa Maria sopra (over) Minerva is a parish church that makes use of the old Roman temple built on this site, so, even if you are not religiously motivated, you will want to enter this church because of its historical significance.

A beautiful thing in a small package
Apr 2019 • Couples
This is a small Baroque style church which has been built inside what was a 1st century BC Roman Temple.

Calming blue interior with richly decorated altar and ceiling.

Beautiful Church interior
Mar 2019 • Couples
I really love this church. Just walk out of the busy and noisy square and into the quiet interior. It's a great place to sit down and pray the Rosary.
