You feel the presence of Saint Francis and the tranquility of the place as soon as you pass the concession stand (inevitable) at the entrance. The chapel, the woods, the simple altars and benches in the woods evoke the spirit of the time.

St. Francis would be startled to discover how easy it is to reach his peaceful sanctuary high on the mountain at the edge of Assisi, but you can still climb on foot if you are so minded. Still an active monastery, it is full of peace. Lovely walks in the surrounding woods an added bonus.

The Eremo is a very special place just outside of Assisi on Mt. Subasio. The grounds are made for peaceful reflection, meditation and/or prayer and include many stops for the visitor that played a significant role in the life of St. Francis.

If you manage to struggle your way up there, you will find the cave where Francesco prayed. And a peaceful forest in the mountains. Maybe not a place of our highest priorities..

Had an opportunity to walk to a lovely Mass in the gorge that St. Francis used for quiet contemplation. Quickly became obvious why this is a treasured place. Takes a 15 minute van ride to get to the gate and then a 15 minute uphill walk to get to the site. Somewhat strenuous. But worth the walk. Beautiful and quiet.... More

We were in a rental car so drove up to the retreat. Along the way are switchbacks and amazing views of the Umbrian countryside. This is said to be a 2.5 km hike up on several trails, which I am sure is beautiful. However, I would drive or take a taxi. Walk down if you will. It is very steep... More

This sanctuary is relatively easy to get to from Assisi either by car or within reasonable walking distance up the road into the Monte Subasio National Park. As an added bonus there is the Porta Cappucini an ancient gateway to go through. At the entrance is a kiosk selling a few drinks (and the inevitable souvenirs) and on first entering... More
