Two churches in one
Aug 2021
The Porziuncola was the church founded by St. Francis after his conversion to spirituality, as well as the church in which St. Clare found asylum after her fleeing from her family home. Nowadays this tiny church can be found inside this majestic structure!

Beautiful
Jul 2021 • Couples
While in Assisi you must see this basilica as well. It is not of big as St. Francesco, but it’s very beautiful in its own right.

A Beautiful Church
Dec 2019
While the basilica itself is magnificent, taking over 100 years to build - the Porziuncola was the gem inside that needs to be seen. A contrast between the magnificent architecture of the basilica and the humble "shack" inside begs the question, "Which is more impressive?"

Be sure not to miss or go through too quickly
Feb 2020
What a great surprise inside - the Porziuncola -- is a seminal and holy place for all Franciscans, so be sure to take time to take it all in and then proceed to the right for all that follows about St Francis: the doves, the rose garden, the creche, the chapel, the museum, the terrific gift shop. You won't regret taking time and fortunately you didn't miss this teriffic basilica by only going to upper Assisi!

Very impressive building!
Feb 2020
Take your time to admire the constructions and the contrasts as the building took 110 years. Don't forget the rose garden and chapel. Even an ongoing mess was not an issue at all.

Its huge
Jun 2019 • Friends
If you visit Assisi, remember to see this church also. The site where Francis begun his journey is magnificient, massive, and majestic. We happened to enter during a mass, and it only added to the experience, even though we didn't see the porziuncola up close (there were few rude tourists who embarked there, middle of church, disrespecting pilgrims and locals attending the mass).

Where the story of St Francis began
Dec 2019
St Francis started his good works in prayer inside this little original chapel encased by the huge Basilica. Go there to experience the mystery

Beautiful and Very Peaceful
Nov 2019 • Couples
A few blocks away from the Assisi train station is a wonderful church built to house and protect a tiny ancient church. The atmosphere is extremely reverent, filled with prayerfulness and subdued sounds - far from the heavily touristed churches that seem to be the norm in Italy. Just lovely!

My Favourite Church in Assisi
Apr 2019
I loved this church the most during my visit to Assisi. There weren't so many tourists or pilgrims as compared to the other basilicas in Assisi, and I felt there were more significance and meaning attached to this place. The highlights would be the Porziuncola (9th Century little church, where the young St. Francis started the Franciscan movement), Chapel of the Transito (where St. Francis died) and the Rose Garden & Chapel. Entrance is free!
