Sienna

This is one of the most remarkable medieval cities in Europe that I have visited. Very well preserved, especially the cathedral and the central square. It is quite lively and crowded.

Our guide took us on an extensive tour of Siena. It was a very interesting town but very hot the day we were there.

Just spend time walking around
Aug 2020
Siena was probably our preferred place in Tuscany, even we visited it on a Sunday and it was quite packed. If you can book a private 2hrs tour just to get explained and shown with more detailed information. Then just wander through the streets

Ok for one day max
Aug 2020 • Couples
It’s a tiny city centre. We couldn’t visit any museums because either a) the queues were horrific or b) they were closed completely or c) they had reached daily capacity by 10.30 am.

It’s possible that Covid was the reason but I’m not convinced it’s any more visitor friendly under usual circumstances.

The shopping area is tiny and whilst the streets are pretty there is little to see for more than a day. We stayed for two nights after a two week trip through France and were happy to continue on through Italy.

A place to complement the soul
Jan 2020
A fantastic city that left us speechless. The historic center of the splendid Tuscan city is a treasure trove. Thanks to its urban and architectural characteristics, the historic center of Siena is a testimony of man's creative genius, and concretely expresses the artistic and aesthetic human capacity. Furthermore, the original example of figurative civilization, in architecture, painting, sculpture and urban planning, has determined an important cultural influence not only in the territory of the Republic of Siena, but also in Italy and Europe, in particular between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries . This is why Siena is one of the most excellent examples of an Italian medieval and Renaissance city. And above all, this is why she entered, with good reason, to be part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is, in fact, the era when numerous artists had the opportunity to express their art here and the city was adorned with wonderful monuments, such as the Duomo, the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia. Piazza del Campo is the same where the famous Palio takes place. Full of restaurants and bars, it is famous for its characteristic trapezoidal shape, downhill towards the center, where the Gaia spring is found, a copy of the fifteenth-century work by Jacopo della Quercia. All around the square stand out the monumental buildings including Palazzo Sansedoni and Palazzo Pubblico. The height of the Torre del Mangia, which dates back to the forties of the fourteenth century of 102 meters, is equal to that of the bell tower of the Cathedral to symbolize the balance achieved between divine and earthly power. At the foot of the tower stands the Piazza Chapel, a marble tabernacle with splendid sculptures inserted in the Gothic niches. Even in addition to Piazza del Campo, however, it is a riot of art and architecture with the succession of churches, including San Domenico, San Francesco and Santa Maria dei Servi, and, of course, the spectacular Duomo, one of the greatest examples of Roman style Italian Gothic. Built around the 12th century, it has a Latin cross structure, a dome, a bell tower and its facade is all in white marble with red Siena and green alternations. Its interior houses precious works by Bernini, Donatello, Michelangelo and Pinturicchio.

Lovely! Wonderful medieval town!
Aug 2019 • Family
Centro Storico di Siena is the old town of this wonderful medieval town, located in Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. In this old town, you can walk, see the very beautiful buildings and narrow streets, eat or drink something and obviously visit some of the charming places like Piazza del Campo (main square) Torre de Magia (the medieval bell tower in the town hall), the Palazzo Pubblico (town hall), the Duomo (Cathedral), some museums like Complesso Museale Santa Maria della Scala. Also, we came here at morning of the Palio's day (a very known medieval horse racing, we came here on 16th August-2019) and all old town was decorated as Middle Ages. Great! Really a top old town in Tuscany, Italy, Europe and probably on world!

Just hang out and let the feeling of the city in
Jun 2019
Most people visit Siena for the day. It's worth much, much more of your time than that. The city center is a terrific place to just sit and enjoy. You get all the conveniences of modern life along with a feel of a Gothic city.

1 Day Not Enough
Jun 2019
We only had 1 day in Siena’s historic centre. It wasn't enough. In fact it was a ridiculously short time. Siena’s historic centre was one of our favourite days but in hindsight, we really short-changed ourselves. I know it is popular as a day trip from Florence but if it is at all possible, I’d recommend spending more than one day here.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The whole historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the two big highlights of our visit were the Piazza Del Campo and the Duomo.
The piazza was a very good starting point - there is so much to see in the piazza alone. It is dominated by the the imposing castle-like Palazzo Pubblico, the 14th century Torre Del Mangia which was built to rival (and beat) Florence’s towers and the Fountain of Joy (who can resist a fountain with a name like that). If you have time, you can climb the tower for stunning views over Siena (museum/tower ticket € 13). The famous bare-back Palio horse-race is also held here and it was the setting for a James Bond chase scene in Quantum of Solace.
The area around the piazza is a pedestrian only zone and its easy to walk between all the main sights. From the piazza, it is lovely to wander through Siena’s narrow lanes and cobblestone streets to the Duomo.
The Duomo is absolutely stunning and can easily take a couple of hours. We spent much longer here than we’d imagined. Again, there’s an awful lot to see in the one place - Donatello, Michelangelo and Bellini works, the Piccolomini library, the crypt and, time permitting, the Door of Heaven rooftop tour.
To avoid wasting precious time in queues, I’d recommend booking ahead.

ARRIVING BY CAR: If you arrive by car, it is important to know that Siena’s historic centre is a ZTL zone and cars are restricted from entering. We parked outside the city walls in the Santa Caterina public carpark and walked in. It was very convenient because it was very close to the outdoor escalators which took us right up to the old town. From the carpark, walk a short way uphill, look out for the large pink building on your right and you’ll see a sign for the escalators which are also on your right (see photo). They will bring you up just a couple of hundred metres from the Duomo.

One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen
Sep 2019
Do your best to take your time here! We were on a Chianti tour through Tuscany for our anniversary and only had limited time in each place, but walking around in this place was like going back in time. Absolutely extraordinary scenery and architecture!
