14th century church that is the Oratorio for the Contrada della Pantera. Houses some important artworks.
Jun 2019
This church was first built in the 14th century and substantially remodelled and renovated in the 16th century with the bell tower being rebuilt in the first half of the 17th century. In the early 19th century, following the suppression of religious orders, the Carmelites abandoned the church and it became a military barracks. In the 20th century the church was subsequently reclaimed and reconsecrated.

Externally the church is quite simple and unattractive with the front gabled facade and the side walls being made of brick and, on the side, the solid brick wall only being punctuated with some large lancet windows. The front facade is partially hidden by the wall of the adjacent cloister built for the monastery. There is a very plain tympanum above the single portal and a rose window high on the facade above that. The most striking feature is the cupola topped quadrangle bell tower that has a clock on it at about the same height as that of the church.

Internally there is a single nave with the ceiling being of fitted wooden trusses. Around the walls, in the chapels and on the altars there are a number of very important 15th and 16th century frescoes and artworks, many from local Sienese artists. The main altar which is constructed of different coloured marble and has some lovely stained glass windows behind it dates from the 17th century but has a sixteenth century ciborium.

The artworks are worth a quick look if you are in the vicinity and the church is open.
