... even if overcrowded with tourists. Which (I know, I am a tourist myself, contributing to the situation) spoils a bit the beauty of the plaza. So better until the evenings when the day tourists are gone and then enjoy the grandezza of this place and its calmness. What you then see is life there. Not the hype at daytime.... More

This is Italy how you imagine it. Have an espresso in one of the countless bars and watch people. Can be very crowded in Summer, so be attentive of your belongings.

You can watch the people strolling by, listen in on conversations around you in multiple languages and soak up the cool evening breeze while dining in one of several outside restaurants around one side of the piazza

It is a special feeling to sit in the middle of the piazza and to watch people relaxing around you. And you can imagine the joy of the crowd when there the palio is going on. This piazza is simply a must in Siena.

It was empty! Mind you, that was because we were there in the middle of a thunderstorm. What made it delightful was that a couple came out of the City Hall having been just married and the the sun came out just in time for their wedding photos.

This was just a one day/night visit and train ride out of Lucca for us but it was worth it! Just beautiful.

We sat outside a restaurant having panini and watched the world go by. The most amusing was the ?chinese lady whose husband was slowly panning a video across the Piazza and she was disappearing out of shot and running behind him to appear from the other side - about four times. Must have made side-splitting viewing.

We had lunch in one of the larger cafes overlooking the Piazza which was great fun and another day we chose a sports bar with a small balcony. Excellent people watching - would love to come back for the Palio Di Siena

As you explore the city, the central piazza is revealed, and it is immediately understood (visually) this is the center of everything in the old city. It's quaint, very safe and easy to take a break from your traveling companion(s) and explore the city on your own. This is great if you've been traveling together for many days, but relish... More
