Very large basilica with wide open space. Interning paintings line the walls. But the main attraction that will draw people are the remains of St. Catherine of Siena. In a small side chapel they have her preserved head and finger.

Went to San Domenico as part of a guided tour round Siena. The church itself is so bound up with the history of Siena, especially their patron saint. There's a huge expanse when you enter, but you can wander round as long as no photo's are taken with flash. Outside the views of Siena itself are amazing, especially with the... More

What was interesting about this church is that relics of St Catherine (her head & her thumb) is stored in this church. Also behind this church is a good spot to take great shots of Siena Cathedral.

When entering, the visitor tends to go to the left and the main altar and side chapels. Do not miss the chapel on the right where St Catherine's portrait is displayed and where she would commune with Jesus, praying the Psalms with him!

San Domenico is worth the visit if you are in Siena. Does not have the majesty of the cathedral....but beautiful art work. You have to see how well the priests treated themselves. No wonder there was a reformation.

The Basilica's out side does not even hint the inside beauty... I would have liked to take pictures... but not allowed...

The very reason why most tourists come to see this gothic Cathedral is to view the severed head of it's Saint that has been preserved here since 1380. There is another treat, that could be worth a visit. Just below and behind the cathedral, down a fairly steep walkway is a spring. This covered spring has delivered it's crystal clear... More

If you visit this church, make sure you go around back. There is a small park right behind the church. You will have the best view of Siena.

We were aghast when we read about this relic and thought to leave this basilica off the agenda. However, when we found it was just down the hill from our hotel, we off course had to go. The church was just another big, old church and we had seen inside soooooo many by this time, but it did have nice... More
